Validation of the 2010 American College of Rheumatology preliminary diagnostic criteria for fibromyalgia in an Iranian population

Abstract: The aim of this study was to validate the 2010 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) preliminary criteria for fibromyalgia (FM) in an Iranian population. In this multicenter prospective study, we enrolled 168 FM patients and 110 controls. All participants underwent dolorimetry examination by study assessors and completed a questionnaire containing variables of both the ACR 2010 preliminary and ACR 1990 criteria. We compared the performance of the ACR 2010 criteria with the expert diagnosis as well as the ACR … Show more

“…When cut-off values were set at WPI ≥14 and SS ≥7, both specificity and overall diagnostic accuracy reached 100%. Whereas previous studies proposed different cut-off values [ 51 ], cross-cultural differences in the expression and rating of symptoms may explain the different results in terms of sensitivity and specificity among different populations [ 25 , 52 ]. Taken together, the frequency distribution of the WPI and SS scores, the mean WPI and SS scores obtained in our sample, and the better specificity observed when using higher cut-off values as criteria suggest that the cut-off values of both scores should be increased, at least for Spanish populations.…”

“…SF-12 measures 8 different concepts of quality of life through 12 questions, which are then aggregated in Physical Component Summary (PCS) and Mental Component Summary (MCS) scores, ranging from 0 (lowest level of health) to 100 (highest level of health), using a specific statistical method [23]. Valid Persian versions of all scales were available [24][25][26][27].…”

“…For the sake of avoiding confounding factors, we selected only female individuals in both groups. Fibromyalgia was diagnosed by an expert rheumatologist using American College of Rheumatology (ACR) 1990 classification criteria or ACR 2010 preliminary criteria [ 17 18 19 ]. Healthy participants, however, were selected from volunteer healthy members of the FM patients' families.…”
