Validation of Scales Measuring Self‐Efficacy and Outcome Expectancy in Evidence‐Based Practice

Abstract: While further investigation of the validity of these tools is needed, preliminary testing indicates that the SE-EBP and OE-EBP scales are valid and reliable instruments for measuring health professionals' confidence in the process and the outcomes of basing their practice on evidence.

“…In nursing research, the main focus on individual factors associated with nurses’ practice of EBP and research use (which is a major component of EBP) has been on attitudes towards research and EBP [9,34]. Some researchers have used cognitive theories in implementation research, especially for exploring the concept of capability beliefs and how it links to EBP among nurses [13,18,35]. However, to develop accurate interventions or educational methods to enhance nursing students’ and nurses’ capability beliefs regarding EBP, we believe there is a need for a more complete utilization of the conceptual framework of capability beliefs.…”

“…Lee and Ko (2010) found a relationship between self-efficacy and individual-level variables and group-level variables in a sample of staff nurses. Chang and Crowe (2011) performed preliminary testing of psychometric properties of two new instruments to measure RNs' selfefficacy and outcome expectancy in regard to evidencebased practice. A moderate level of self-efficacy was noted along with moderate evidence-based practice understanding and outcome expectations.…”

“…However, although the literature has addressed the clinical question of the relationship of high self-efficacy as a predictive characteristic of staff RNs and student nurses in specific clinical situations (Chang & Crowe, 2011;Cheraghi et al, 2009;Lee & Ko, 2010;Manojlovich, 2005aManojlovich, , 2005bTyler et al, 2012), with additional pressure for non-baccalaureateprepared RNs to pursue higher educational preparation, it is not clear how self-efficacy affects their success. A strong sense of self-efficacy allows for perseverance with goals despite obstacles along the way.…”

“…The strength of the present study is the systematic application of frameworks such as the KTA, TDF and the BCW in planning the implementation of the new model of care. Use of theory and frameworks has been shown to be more effective than projects based on intuition . Furthermore, strengths include the structured approach to implementation of evidence‐based guidelines in service development, which allows for future research, wider collaboration and assistance in streamlining services.…”
