While sulfur dioxide (SO 2 ) emissions have been dramatically restricted in the past few decades, some cities in developing countries still encounter high pollution levels. This makes it essential to implement an air quality monitoring network in these sensitive regions. Results from a program of measuring groundlevel concentration of SO 2 (from December 2004 till July 2006) at 22 curbside and background sites within the city of Beirut (Lebanon) are presented for the first time. Four-week sampling period measurements were made over 20 periods for all sites by passive sampling. Low SO 2 concentrations were observed (3.1 parts per billion on average for the whole period). This value is among the lowest observed in urban areas worldwide. Thus, Beirut is not polluted by SO 2 on an annual basis. Highest concentrations were measured in winter time, resulting from low height of the boundary layer and higher emissions of SO 2 (e.g., heating). Cluster analysis revealed two different SO 2 variation patterns over the city (high-and low-level patterns), highlighting the effects of local sources location and wind direction variability on SO 2 distribution. Analysis of seasonal variations pointed out a springtime SO 2 maximum in 2005. Beside local sources, long-range transport can account for an important source of SO 2 in Beirut, explaining around 50% of SO 2 levels within the city.

H I G H L I G H T S• This study documents the increasing importance of on-road emissions of NH 3.• NO x emissions control mechanisms frequently result in NH 3 production and emissions.• NH 3 is an important driver of N deposition in urban-affected areas and near roadways.• NH 4 -N:NO 3 -N ratios in urban deposition are indicative of elevated NH 3 emissions.• On-road NH 3 emissions exceed agricultural emissions where 40% of the U.S. resides. We provide updated spatial distribution and inventory data for on-road NH 3 emissions for the continental United States (U.S.) On-road NH 3 emissions were determined from on-road CO 2 emissions data and empirical NH 3 :CO 2 vehicle emissions ratios. Emissions of NH 3 from on-road sources in urbanized regions are typically 0.1-1.3 t km −2 yr −1 while NH 3 emissions in agricultural regions generally range from 0.4-5.5 t km G R A P H I C A L A B S T R A C T a b s t r a c t a r t i c l e i n f o, with a few hotspots as high as 5.5-11.2 t km −2 yr −1. Counties with higher vehicle NH 3 emissions than from agriculture include 40% of the U.S. population. The amount of wet inorganic N deposition as NH 4 + from the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) network ranged from 37 to 83% with a mean of 58.7%. Only 4% of the NADP sites across the U.S. had b45% of the N deposition as NH 4 + based on data from 2014 to 2016, illustrating the near-universal elevated proportions of NH 4 + in deposition across the U.S. Case studies of on-road NH 3 emissions in relation to N deposition include four urban sites in Oregon and Washington where the average NH 4 -N:NO 3 -N ratio in bulk deposition was 2.3. At urban sites in the greater Los Angeles Basin, bulk deposition of NH 4 -N and NO 3 -N were equivalent, while NH 4 -N:NO 3 -N in throughfall under shrubs ranged from 0.6 to 1.7. The NH 4 -N:NO 3 -N ratio at 7-10 sites in the Lake Tahoe Basin averaged 1.4 and 1.6 in bulk deposition and throughfall, and deposition of NH 4 -N was strongly correlated with summertime NH 3 concentrations. To improve the current understanding of the ammonia distribution in the major urban area of Chile, measurements of atmospheric NH 3 were collected in Santiago during three sampling periods (25 April to 27 May, 11 to 26 June and 27 June to 31 July 2008). Additionally, air quality and meteorological data as well as NH 4 + , NO 3 -, SO 4 = and Ca +2 concentrations in fine particles were collected during the same period. NH 3 concentrations for the different sites in the three sampling periods varied from 7.7 ± 2.0 µg/m 3 to 19.8 ± 2.1 µg/m 3 . The results of one-way ANOVA and cluster analysis suggest that were no significant differences between the three sampling periods, but significant differences in NH 3 concentrations were detected between the sampling sites. Furthermore, two clusters were found with a pronounced difference between sampling sites located in the eastern part of the city and those located in the western part of the city. The results suggest that the distribution of ammonia in the western part of the city is due to the emissions of ammonia by agricultural areas, wetlands and the large sewage treatment plants, while in the eastern part of the city, ammonia emissions are governed by vehicular emissions. Fine particles (PM 2.5 ) chemical speciation showed NH 4 + /SO 4 = and NO 3 -/SO 4 = molar-equivalents ratios of 5.7 ± 0.3 and 1.8 ± 0.1, respectively. The results show that during the sampling period, complete neutralisation of H 2 SO 4 and HNO 3 occurred in the presence of excess of NH 4 + and NH 3 . Therefore, the atmosphere of Santiago can be considered to be ammonia-rich in the gas phase. Abundant NH 3 was present to neutralise the acid components, such as H 2 SO 4 and HNO 3 , and to form fine particulate ammonium salts, such as (NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 , NH 4 NO 3 and others. Relatively high humidity and low temperatures in the cold season support the formation of particulate ammonium nitrate.
