The food industry has confronted, in recent years, numerous issues including meeting a food demand for individual well-being in a sufficient and healthy manner, also due to the effects of the world population growth. In this scenario, alternative food sources may be a key element both for their contribution to food needs and for the promotion of sustainable and innovative production patterns. These food sources, new compared to traditional food styles, have been regulated by specific European Union regulations under the definition of novel foods. Their importance in the world has raised different topics of scientific research. The present paper aimed to seize the direction of scientific studies in the world focused on the thematic area of novel foods, from a management point of view. This study analyzed 209 papers and carried out a descriptive analysis and a network analysis of the thematic areas under examination also with the help of the software VOSviewer. The results highlighted the importance of scientific research in the world also for the contributions on the exploration of existing markets as well as for the innovative solutions it provides, which aim to expand market possibilities. Finally, the existence of several elements and factors, which may discourage the propensity to consume and therefore the development of the novel foods market, seemed to emerge, and for this reason, many surveys focused on finding solutions to overcome these potential obstacles.

PurposeFood safety management systems (FSMSs) are implemented in food supply chains primarily to adhere to regulations as well as meet customer requirements. The literature contains examples of successful and failed implementation of FSMSs, including the influencing factors. This paper aims to explore the literature on the effectiveness factors of FSMSs to identify the literature findings, the emerging themes and suggestions for future research.Design/methodology/approachA systematic literature review (SLR) is used to synthesise research on the factors influencing the effectiveness of FSMSs. The methodology consists of formulating the research questions, identifying, selecting and evaluating relevant studies, analysing, synthesising and presenting findings.FindingsThe effectiveness factors of FSMSs identified from the literature are clustered into five categories, namely (1) FSMS culture; (2) FSMS inspection, verification and audit; (3) FSMS knowledge; (4) Legal regulations; and (5) Prerequisite programmes. Moreover, it was determined that the effectiveness factors featured in a variety of contexts.Research limitations/implicationsSLR is an objective, rigorous and reliable approach to exploring the effectiveness factors of FSMSs. However, the results are contingent on research studies selected for review, which depends on the research criteria used, available and accessible research studies and the criteria for inclusion and exclusion of studies. This dependency introduces bias, an intrinsic limitation of the SLR approach.Originality/valueIn this study, the effectiveness factors of FSMSs are identified utilising an SLR approach, integrating findings from previously reported research. The factors and resulting emerging themes identified in this study are beneficial, including in improving food safety management practices.

RESUMOA pandemia causada pelo novo coronavírus (vírus SARS-CoV-2) é o tema mais discutido na mídia do mundo inteiro atualmente. A Organização Mundial de Saúde decretou estado de emergência de saúde pública, uma vez que o número de óbitos e casos confirmados crescem absurdamente, trazendo preocupações em todos os setores trabalhistas, sociais e culturais, inclusive no setor alimentício. Até o momento, diversas recomendações têm sido dadas a população como medidas preventivas à contaminação, sendo uma delas considerada uma das mais essenciais para a redução da proliferação do vírus, o processo de higienização (compreendida pelas etapas de limpeza e desinfecção), além da aplicação de barreiras físicas combinadas com o gerenciamento comportamental das pessoas e da conscientização sobre uma alimentação saudável, com o intuito de aumentar a imunidade.Portanto, a proposta deste estudo foi realizar uma revisão narrativa de informações bibliográficas majoritariamente qualitativas com ênfase nos aspectos que envolvem os alimentos em meio a pandemia do novo coronavírus. Esta pesquisa é de caráter exploratório e bibliográfico realizada no período de abril a agosto de 2020, onde utilizou-se descritores relacionados ao tema nos buscadores de maior facilidade de acesso. Esta revisão bibliográfica foi estruturada em tópicos específicos, onde é abordado assuntos desde a origem da COVID-19 (nome da doença causa pelo vírus SARS-CoV-2) até as perspectivas futuras em um contexto pós pandemia. As informações publicadas até o momento revelam que o conjunto das normas de segurança de alimentos contribuem para uma melhor articulação de ideias relacionadas ao elo entre os alimentos com o COVID-19. O conhecimento das questões que emergem a segurança de alimentos pode contribuir de forma positiva em um cenário de calamidade pública mundial.
