INTRODUCCIÓN. Se observó deficiencia de información en cuanto a la relación entre los pensamientos automáticos y el miedo al dentista, el cual es la razón principal para evitar o posponer el tratamiento odontológico comprometiendo la salud oral. OBJETIVO. Examinar la correlación entre los niveles de ansiedad dental y los pensamientos automáticos en los pacientes odontológicos de la Cruz Roja en la provincia de Tungurahua. MÉTODO. Estudio no experimental de tipo transversal con alcance explicativo, correlacional. Se emplearon tres escalas: Kleinknecht Dental Fear Scale (DFS), la Encuesta de Ansiedad Dental Modificada de Corah (MDAS) y el Inventario Automático de Pensamientos de Ruíz y Luján mientras que el análisis estadístico se realizó mediante alfa de Cronbach. RESULTADOS. El análisis demostró que los pensamientos automáticos más comunes son: filtraje (51%), falacia de razón (54%), falacia de recompensa divina (54%) y "debería" (50%). Así también, el 65.9% presentó niveles moderados de miedos dentales y el 46.2% niveles de ansiedad dental leve. DISCUSIÓN Y CONCLUSIONES. Los resultados revelaron que los niveles de ansiedad dental varían en términos del procedimiento dental que han experimentado los pacientes y el bajo nivel de ansiedad se relaciona con el elemento relacional del profesional.

Psychometric analysis and reliability of the dental treatment motivation scale for Indonesian pregnant women

This study aimed to obtain the results of psychometric analysis and reliability of the dental treatment motivation scale (DTMS), which was adapted cross-culturally for pregnant women in Indonesia. A descriptive survey was conducted with 149 pregnant women at a maternal clinic in Bandung City, Indonesia, in December 2020. Convenience sampling was chosen as the sampling technique after the inclusion and exclusion criteria had been fulfilled. Two English experts initially translated the DTMS questionnaire from English into Indonesian and the translated questionnaire was then reviewed by four expert panels, which were modified afterwards. The validity test was carried out using the exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses and goodness of fit index (GFI). The internal reliability analysis used Cronbach's alpha, and the test-retest was conducted using Pearson's correlation coefficient. The psychometric analysis results were obtained from four testing stages. The first stage was the initial eigenvalue assessment, and the cumulative percentage value was >60%. The second stage was the exploratory factor analysis, with a loading factor of >0.3. The third stage consisted of the confirmatory factor analysis, forming two components of the factor structure (intrinsic and extrinsic motivations). Finally, the fourth stage was the GFI assessment, which showed the good fit model with a value of 0.903. Very high internal consistency reliability ranged from 0.985 to 0.990; the test-retest p-value of Pearson's correlation coefficient was 0.000. In conclusion, the Indonesian version of the DTMS proved to be a reliable and valid instrument to measure Indonesian pregnant women's motivation to seek oral health treatment.

Background: The face, leg, activity, cry, and consolability (FLACC) scale is a validated pain measurement instrument that is used on postoperative patients with limited verbal ability, including postoperative cleft lip and/or cleft palate patients. Objective: This research aimed to test the validity and reliability of the Indonesian version of the FLACC scale as a measuring instrument for pain intensity experienced by postoperative cleft lip and/or cleft palate patients. Methods: The procedure was initiated by a back-translation process of the FLACC. Once the back-translation process is completed, a calibration process of the field researchers was conducted. Twenty-eight participants that went through a cleft lip and/or cleft palate surgery at the Unpad Dental Hospital were then enrolled. Two calibrated field researchers measured the postoperative pain intensity in three different time points, shortly after the patients regained full consciousness (T0), four hours (T1), and eight hours after the first measurement (T2). The collected data were analysed by SPSS version 23. The Spearman correlation analysis was performed to test the validity, while a Cronbach’s alpha value was calculated to test the reliability. Results: Based on the results of the Spearman correlation analysis, the Indonesian version of the FLACC scale was considered to be valid as the r values of each sub-scale were all higher than the r table value (r value > 0.317). Reliability was marked by the obtained Cronbach’s alpha value of 0,875. Conclusion: The Indonesian version of the FLACC scale was considered to be valid and reliable to be used as a pain measurement tool in postoperative cleft lip and/or cleft palate patients.
