Validation of Internal structure of Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale among Indian Medical Students using factor analysis and the Structural equation Modelling Approach

Abstract: Background The Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) is a tool that helps in the assessment of the readiness of the students to pursue Self-Directed Learning (SDL). There are no documented studies on the validation of internal structure of the SDLRS among Indian medical students. Hence, the objective of this study is to validate the internal structure of SDLRS among Indian medical students using factor analysis and the Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) approach. … Show more

“…Helfrich et al (2009), on the other hand, introduced the Organizational Readiness to Change Assessment (ORCA) instrument, which was patterned after the Promoting Action on Research in Health Services (PARIHS) framework and developed to test interventions designed to implement evidencebased changes in clinical practice. Kumar et al (2021) did a study to validate the internal structure of the Fisher's Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) and convert it for Indian respondents. The original scale was tested using Exploratory Factor Analysis, Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Cronbach's Alpha.…”

“…According to this study, SDL is the way for IS students to be empowered and learn in this digital age. SDL students are those who can be accountable for their learning process (Kumar, Omprakash, Mani, Swaminathan, Maheshkumar, Maruthy & Padmavathi, 2021).…”

“…Several SDL models can be implemented in IS discipline for students and lecturers to keep learning continuously (Kumar et al, 2021;Tredoux, 2012). The educational environment keeps evolving, and SDL models have been proposed for students in IS discipline to meet the needs of 21st-century learning trends and expectations.…”

“…[ 8 9 ] Researchers have validated this readiness scale for Indian students and implemented them after modification, demonstrating overall construct validity for 36 items rather than 40. [ 14 ] The 20 item-based self-directed learning instrument (SDLI)[ 11 ] developed and validated by Cheng and colleagues is categorized into four dimensions of SDL: motivation, plan and execution, self-monitoring, and interpersonal relationships do not explore all the items for assessing the readiness of the undergraduate student for SDL.…”
