Surface equipment for Managed Pressure Drilling operations handles a multiphase mixture of drilling mud, cuttings and reservoir fluid influx. It is mandatory for safe MPD operations that surface equipment be able to handle pressure surges, pressure drops as well as any phase change of the fluid without causing any safety issues. In MPD operations, the surface choke is a key surface manifold component through which the fluid passes before entering the measurement gauges or solids control processing. Depending on choke position and flow conditions, part of the fluid can change phase from liquid to gas as it flows through the chokes resulting in formation of a gaseous phase that can be problematic for the downstream flow measurement devices and equipment integrity. A detailed analysis of the phase transition of the fluid in the surface equipment is necessary that can elucidate design modifications to ensure accurate measurements for safe and efficient drilling operations.In this work, multiphase fluid flow is analyzed numerically using 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and a 1-D hydraulics network solver to understand the effects of choke positions on the overall pressure drop, pressure surges and onset of phase transformation to ensure surface equipment safety. 1-D hydraulics network results are validated against the 3-D CFD software as well as against experimental studies. Based on extensive numerical 1-D studies, look-up tables and charts were developed that help field personnel design the best surface equipment configuration, determine associated pressure drop and guard against the possibility of phase transformation.

As the overhead expenses for production was beginning to increase in the South Ghawar oil field, an operation optimization opportunity became a basic need to fully utilize resources. The optimization called for shutting down and mothballing of three gas-oil separation plants (GOSPs) and rerouting wells production to the nearest respective GOSP. This process was expected to have minor effect on the production potential of individual wells, due to subsequent increments in the length of the flow line. Evaluation of production potential for all the rerouted wells within a very short time was made possible through the installation and commissioning of two multiphase flow meters (MPFMs) per GOSP to cover low and high flow rate range producers. In a well-planned and executed campaign, each group of wells were rigorously tested through their designated MPFM, the results analyzed, compared with historical data and further assessed against results of downhole production logging and wellhead samples for validation 4. This paper discusses the unique experience gathered and lessons learned during this major resource optimization program, starting from the selection of MPFM type to the fine-tuning of the MPFM parameters to fit a relatively wide spectrum of flow ranges by using appropriate geochemical and pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data and to finally arrive at a fairly accurate production rate measurement for the field. Each step in this process presented a challenge for the implementation team that mandated tremendous analysis and teamwork to overcome these challenges.

Multiphase flowmeters (MPFMs) have been used since the early 1990's in the oil and gas industry and have gained acceptance in many environments. They have been considered the primary metering option for a wide range of applications - from heavy oil to wet gas. The combination of operational benefits, measurement robustness, demonstrable accuracy, and auditability has improved their status from new, unproven technology to that of the premium mainstream metering option. With more than a decade of experience acquired using a combination venturi and gamma-ray multiphase flowmeters, further gains in measurement quality and operational robustness have been achieved. We will illustrate how enhancements in fraction measurements using multi-energy gamma ray attenuation and a more comprehensive analysis of the gamma-ray spectrum have been developed and implemented to provide better measurement accuracy and stability, leading to enhanced performances in multiphase flow measurements. Another area of improvement that has been pursued is in the field of modeling of multiphase flows through a venturi. Historically, single-phase flow equations have been used, being adapted to multiphase flows by semi-empirical means to account for their complexity. While such models have proven robust for most standard applications, they can reach some limitations in particular conditions. We will present how a more dynamic model that considers the nature of the flow has led to improved accuracy of multiphase flow measurements. We present the scientific basis for the new enhancements as well as illustrate the accuracy gains achieved based on hundreds of flow loop test points, ultimately leading to the quantification of the accuracy gains obtained through those technological improvements.
