Changes in key climate index affect ecosystems and biodiversity. In this regard, the assessment of the climatic conditions is of particular relevance. This study presents the results of an analysis of climate change and digital mapping of soil temperature in the Yangan-Tau UNESCO Global Geopark (Russia). The steady increase in air temperature was revealed, which causes an increase in the sum of active temperatures and the duration of the warm period of the year. Annual total precipitation during 1966-2020 changed the sign of the trend: positive trend (increase in precipitation) in 1966-1990, while in 1991-2020 is negative. The hydrothermal indicators determined the increase in aridity during the warm period. Based on the analysis of changes in the climatic conditions of the geopark, a comparison was made of the temperature regimes of air and soil, and the relationship between these indicators in the snow-free period was revealed (R2 = 0.62). An approach is presented for digital mapping of the temperature regime of the surface layer of soils based on ground-based research data and the results of interpretation of the Landsat thermal bands. A significant relationship between soil temperature and Earth surface temperature for the snow-free period was revealed (R2 = 0.83). Based on the obtained regression model and Landsat 8-9 data for the snow-free period of 2013-2022 the map of the distribution of average temperatures of the surface layer of soil from May to October was produced, which clearly demonstrated the relationship between soil temperature and biomes. The dynamics of land surface temperature (LST) in Afghanistan in the period 2000–2021 were investigated, and the impact of the factors such as soil moisture, precipitation, and vegetation coverage on LST was assessed. The remotely sensed soil moisture data from Land Data Assimilation System (FLDAS), precipitation data from Climate Hazards Group Infra-Red Precipitation with Station (CHIRPS), and NDVI and LST from Moderate-Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) were used. The correlations between these data were analyzed using the regression method. The result shows that the LST in Afghanistan has a slightly decreasing but insignificant trend during the study period (R = 0.2, p-value = 0.25), while vegetation coverage, precipitation, and soil moisture had an increasing trend. It was revealed that soil moisture has the highest impact on LST (R = −0.71, p-value = 0.0007), and the soil moisture, precipitation, and vegetation coverage explain almost 80% of spring (R2 = 0.73) and summer (R2 = 0.76) LST variability in Afghanistan. The LST variability analysis performed separately for Afghanistan’s river subbasins shows that the LST of the Amu Darya subbasin had an upward trend in the study period, while for the Kabul subbasin, the trend was downward.

Caspian Sea level (CSL) fluctuations are driven by reciprocal hydro-meteorological processes that extend not only over the entire catchment area but also far beyond. According to the research literature, CSL has dropped approximately 3 m in the short-term (1929–1977). In this study, change in precipitation, runoff, and evaporation in the catchment area, river discharge, sea surface temperature (SST), and also CSL change were investigated over 40-year decades. Study results reveal two major change in the increasing trend of SST anomalies. With an increasing trend of 0.03 at the CS level, the results indicate an increase in temperature of more than 1.5°C during the study period, which can be a response to the increase in air and land surface temperature on a regional and global scale. The decline in river discharge levels has also been significant in recent decades. Reconstruction of long-term change in CSL with daily water level data between 1981–2020 through fluxes also showed that the average sea level rise was about 20 cm/yr in the 1981–1995 period and a decrease of 6 cm/yr during the 1996–2020 period was well visible in the results of the water balance equation. Moreover, according to the observed peak values of the four parameters precipitation, evaporation, runoff, and SST, the trend of increasing sea surface temperature and decreasing precipitation (with a slope of -1.8 mm/40 year) is more consistent with CSL change.
