Validation of AVHRR Land Surface Temperature with MODIS and In Situ LST—A TIMELINE Thematic Processor

Abstract: Land Surface Temperature (LST) is an important parameter for tracing the impact of changing climatic conditions on our environment. Describing the interface between long- and shortwave radiation fluxes, as well as between turbulent heat fluxes and the ground heat flux, LST plays a crucial role in the global heat balance. Satellite-derived LST is an indispensable tool for monitoring these changes consistently over large areas and for long time periods. Data from the AVHRR (Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiomet… Show more

“…Similar methods have been tested to assess the relationship between EST and AT [12][13][14][15]20]. Preferably, materials were prepared for large areas using MODIS images [3,[14][15][16]20]. Soil ST mapping is a developing area and Landsat data can be used for small areas.…”

“…In general, soil temperature (ST) is recognized by the World Meteorological Organization as one of the important climatic parameters [3]. The state of vegetation largely depends on the ST. For example, the impact of extreme STs can affect the levels of biological organization [4,5] and interact with other driving climate variables, changing the range and stability of many ecosystems [6].…”

“…The temperature of the land surface is one of the most fundamental parameters of the Earth in geophysical research on both local and global scales [1]. It was recognized as one of the key climate parameters by the World Meteorological Organization [2,3]. Land Surface Temperature (LST) is one of the key variables in the Earth's energy exchange, and it plays an important role in assessing the surface energy level, being the interface between turbulent heat fluxes and Earth heat fluxes.…”

“…LST VariationLST, or land surface temperature derived from satellite data, has become an essential tool for tracking climate change in recent decades. This atmospheric parameter is recognized as one of the essential climate variables (ECVs) by the World Meteorological Organization, which can be used directly to extract global warming trends and anomalies since it is a key parameter in the exchange of energy at the ground level(Reiners et al, 2021). Therefore, ERA5-Land Skin Temperature product was used to understand how the surface temperature change in the Caspian catchment.…”
