“…Short-term reproductive bioassays are used to quantitate the effects of EDCs on fish reproduction and endocrine-related biomarkers. In Fundulus these studies have been developed and optimized using primarily 17␣-ethynylestradiol as the stressor (Blewett et al, 2013;Bosker et al, 2009Bosker et al, , 2010Doyle et al, 2013;MacLatchy et al, 2003). Yet there is evidence both from wild fish populations (Bugel et al, 2010;Pait and Nelson, 2009) and mammalian studies that PAHs, including BaP, also adversely impact reproductive potential.…”

“…The following study utilized Fundulus heteroclitus in a shortterm waterborne exposure in order to assess if BaP's published effects on aromatase modulation would translate into reproductive deficits. The experiment was adapted from previously described studies (Bosker et al, 2010;MacLatchy et al, 2003;Peters et al, 2007) in order to quickly observe potential impacts of BaP exposure to reproductive and steroidogenic endpoints.…”

“…In July of 2009, mummichog were exposed using a modified and validated short‐term reproductive test, to optimize statistical power to detect differences . Fish were held in 16‰ saline water at 18 °C to 20 °C, under a summer photoperiod (16:8‐h light:dark) at >80% dissolved oxygen.…”

“…Due to their euryhaline tolerances, mummichog are a model species providing the ability to test impacts of EDCs across a range of salinities. Studies using the northern subspecies of mummichog (F. h. macrolepidotus) have resulted in standardized reproductive endocrine bioassays (MacLatchy et al, 2003) and adult fish reproductive tests (Peters et al, 2007;Bosker et al, 2010), which have been used to assess the impacts of complex effluents (e.g., pulp mill; Bosker et al, 2009), environmental contaminants (including EE 2 ; Bosker et al, 2016), or other model compounds (e.g., androgens; Glinka et al, 2015;Rutherford et al, 2015). A suite of relevant endpoints, spanning various levels of biological organization have been used to assess the effects of EE 2 on reproductive function in mummichog.…”
