Introduction: It has been shown that kinesiophobia has a negative influence on the outcomes of cardiac rehabilitation and consequently is important for the clinical setting. Objective: The objective of this study was to translate, culturally adapt, and psychometrically validate the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia Heart (TSK-SV Heart) to Brazilian Portuguese. Methods: The Portuguese version was tested in 300 patients in cardiac rehabilitation. Test-retest reliability was assessed by intraclass correlation coefficient, internal consistency by Cronbach’s alpha, and criterion validity was assessed with respect to patients’ education, income, duration of cardiac rehabilitation, and sex. Results: After intraclass correlation coefficient analysis, one item was excluded. All four areas were considered internally consistent (α >0.7). Significant differences between mean total scores and income (p<0.01) supported the criterion validity. Two hundred sixty-nine (89.6%) patients had a high level of kinesiophobia (scores > 37). Conclusions: The Brazilian Portuguese version of TSK-SV Heart demonstrated sufficient reliability, consistency and validity, supporting its use in future studies.

Background To assess levels of kinesiophobia (fear of movement) in patients hospitalized for acute cardiovascular disease. Hypothesis Increased levels of kinesiophobia can be found in subjects hospitalized for acute cardiovascular disease. Methods Seventy‐four consecutive patients admitted for acute coronary syndrome and 58 for acute heart failure were enrolled in the study and assessed by the Tampa Scale for the evaluation of kinesiophobia. Subjects were compared with a reference population with stable coronary artery disease and healthy controls. Results No significant differences were found between acute coronary syndrome and acute heart failure in terms of kinesiophobia, even considering the rates of high kinesiophobia (Tampa score >37) and the 4 groups of questionnaire items (danger, fear, avoidance, dysfunction). Differences, however, were significant comparing our population with an historical population of subjects with stable coronary artery disease and controls (43 ± 5 vs 35 ± 7 vs 33 ± 6, P < 0.0001 in both cases). A significant correlation was found between the grade of kinesiophobia in the Tampa Scale and the age of subjects (r = 0.27, P = 0.001) and inversely with level of education (r = −0.33, P < 0.0001). Conclusions Increased levels of kinesiophobia can be found in subjects hospitalized for acute cardiovascular disease. Kinesiophobia is related to age and education. Kinesiophobia should be carefully considered in subjects hospitalized in acute cardiac care units.

Background Our recent study has demonstrated that kinesiophobia is common in Chinese inpatients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Symptoms of heart failure (HF), coping mode, self‐efficacy for exercise (SEE), and social support have been reported to be associated with kinesiophobia. However, little is known about the relationships between these four variables and kinesiophobia in older patients with CHF. Objective To test a model of influencing factors of kinesiophobia in older CHF patients. Methods A cross‐sectional design was conducted from January 2021 to October 2021. The general information questionnaire, the Chinese version of the Tampa Scale for Kinesiophobia Heart (TSK‐SV Heart‐C), Symptom Status Questionnaire‐Heart Failure, SEE, the Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire, and Social Support Rating Scale were used. Spearman correlation analysis and structural equation model (SEM) were performed for data analysis. Results A total of 270 older patients with CHF were recruited. Symptom status of HF (r = 0.455, p < .01), avoidance coping mode (r = 0.393, p <.01), and yielding coping mode (r = 0.439, p < .01) were positively correlated with kinesiophobia, while SEE (r = −0.530, p < .01), facing coping mode (r = −0.479, p < .01), and social support (r = −0.464, p < .01) were negatively correlated with kinesiophobia. SEM analysis showed that social support could affect kinesiophobia through the mediating variables of symptom status of HF, avoidance coping mode, and exercise self‐efficacy. Conclusions Symptoms of HF, coping mode, SEE, and social support may play role in kinesiophobia in older CHF patients. We should pay more attention to the synergies among these four variables in the improvement of kinesiophobia.
