Validation of a Questionnaire to Diagnose the Baumann Skin Type in All Ethnicities and in Various Geographic Locations

Abstract: The Baumann Skin Typing System diagnoses patients as having one of 16 skin types based on their answers to a validated questionnaire [i] known as the Baumann Skin Type Indicator [ii]. The BSTI questionnaire has been tested over the last decade on over 200,000 people of various ages and ethnicities in different geographic locations around the world. In this study, data were collected from 52,862 patients to compare skin type prevalence between those who presented to doctor's offices and those who took the quiz … Show more

“…Although the definition of sensitive skin was not strictly identical to that of the present study, a theoretical concept based on skin reactivity to extrinsic factor reported a similar prevalence (38.2%∼51.9% of males) 9,14 . The percentages of pigmented type in all ages were reported to be less than 20%, which was much lower than those of previous studies on BST of Caucasian populations (39%∼53%) 15 . This may be due to the ethnic differences relating to genes involved in melanin and tyrosinase since the questions regarding pigmented traits in this survey were weighted towards the genetic background 16,17 .…”

“…Increased sebum production is often interpreted as oily skin , thus the skin type could be accounted as a risk factor of acne vulgaris. Dry skin is identifiable with the disturbed lipid barrier around keratinocytes which augments the loss of transepidermal water [4]. Weakened skin barrier causes bacteria to easily enter and infect the skin and induce acne vulgaris [5]…”
