Abstract. Problematic Internet Use (PIU) involves cognitive distortions and dysfunctional behaviors (e.g., compulsive Internet use or using the Internet to alleviate negative emotions) that lead to negative outcomes in various areas of an individual's life. The Generalized Problematic Internet Use Scale 2 (GPIUS2) is one of the few theory-driven instruments to measure the type of PIU associated with the unique communicative context available online. The purpose of this study was to expand upon previous empirical evidence of the psychometric properties of the GPIUS) among Italian young adults. The present psychometric evaluation of the Italian version of the GPIUS2 was conducted on a sample of 748 undergraduate students (48.3% males) from 18 to 26 years old (M= 21.84 years, SD = 2.20). With regard to scale dimensionality, the four first-order factors model (i.e. preference for online social interaction, mood regulation, deficient self-regulation, and negative outcomes) was confirmed (fit indices: Satorra-Bentler scaled χ 2 /df = 3.03; Comparative Fit Index = 0.93; Tucker-Lewis index = 0.92; Root Mean Square Error of Approximation = 0.05). Internal-consistency Cronbach's alpha ranged from 0.72 to 0.89. Convergent validity is demonstrated with significant correlations between GPIUS2 and Internet Addiction Test score. Validity was also assessed by exploring the relationship between GPIUS2 and several indices of psychosocial well-being that were expected to be related to PIU on the basis of previous studies. The overall results confirm previous evidence that the GPIUS2 is an adequate measure of generalized PIU cognitions, behaviors, and outcomes among young adults.

Objective: To evaluate construct validity and reliability of the Portuguese (Brazil) version of Online Cognition Scale (OCS-BR). Methods: Portuguese (Brazil) versions of Online Cognition Scale (OCS), of Internet Addiction Test (IAT) and socio demographic questionnaire was applied to a sample (n = 359) of health university students. Construct validity evidence was verified through the factorial and convergent validity by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and internal consistency and stability analysis through Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) respectively. Discriminative power of items were analyzed using item-total correlation and point biserial correlation. Results: OCS-BR presented satisfactory evidence of construct validity. The instrument showed Cronbach's alpha of 0.91 and ICC of 0.91. Conclusion: Portuguese (Brazil) version of OCS shows items consistently gatherd to measure the Problematic Internet Use (PIU) construct, it is considered s stable instrument in time and with sufficient evidence of construct validity. Métodos: As versões em português (Brasil) da Online Cognition Scale (OCS), da Internet Addiction Test (IAT) e um questionário sociodemográfico foram aplicados em uma amostra (n = 359) de estudantes universitários de saúde. A evidên-cia de validade de construto foi verificada por meio da validade fatorial e convergente pela Análise Fatorial Confirmatória e pela análise da consistência internal e estabilidade pelo alpha de Cronbach e coeficiente de correlação intraclasse (ICC), respectivamente. O poder discriminativo de itens foi analisado usando a correlação item-total e a correlação do ponto bisserial. Resultados: A OCS-BR apresentou evidência satisfatória de validade de construto. O instrumento apresentou o alpha de Cronbach de 0,91 e ICC de 0,91. Conclusão: A versão em Português (Brasil) de OCS mostra itens consistentemente reunidos para medir o construto Uso Problemático de Internet, sendo considerado um instrumento estável no tempo e com evidência suficiente de validade de construto. To investigate study quality and reported prevalence among the emergent area of problematic Internet use (PIU) research conducted in populations of US adolescents and college students. Data Sources: We searched PubMed, PsycINFO, and Web of Knowledge from inception to July 2010. Study Selection: Using a keyword search, we evaluated English-language PIU studies with populations of US adolescents and college students. Main Outcome Measures: Using a quality review tool based on the Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) statement, 2 reviewers independently extracted data items including study setting, subject population, instrument used, and reported prevalence.Results: Search results yielded 658 articles. We identified 18 research studies that met inclusion criteria. Qual-ity assessment of studies ranged between 14 and 29 total points of a possible 42 points; the average score was 23 (SD 5.1). Among these 18 studies, 8 reported prevalence estimates of US college student PIU; prevalence rates ranged from 0% to 26.3%. An additional 10 studies did not report prevalence. Conclusions:The evaluation of PIU remains incomplete and is hampered by methodological inconsistencies. The wide range of conceptual approaches may have impacted the reported prevalence rates. Despite the newness of this area of study, most studies in our review were published more than 3 years ago. Opportunities exist to pursue future studies adhering to recognized quality guidelines, as well as applying consistency in theoretical approach and validated instruments.
