Validation of a multiple criteria tool for healthcare facilities quality evaluation

Abstract: Purpose Several healthcare quality assessment tools measure the processes and outcomes of the care system. The actual physical infrastructure (buildings and organizational) aspects are, however, rarely considered. The purpose of this paper is to describe the process of validation and weighting of an evidence-informed framework for the quality assessment of hospital facilities from social, environmental and organizational perspectives to complement other assessments. Design/methodology/approach Sustainable Hi… Show more

“…Studies published in recent literature have started investigating, in a systematic way, the overall quality of built environment [ 29 , 30 ] and living spaces, revealing that the absence of accessible outdoor space from the house (e.g., garden, terrace) contributed to concerning levels of psychological and behavioral symptomatology [ 31 ], confirming that housing environments could be associated with the mental health and wellbeing of residents [ 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 , 36 ]. While mental illnesses can be investigated through structured and validated scales, housing quality is mainly assessed in terms of occupants’ perception, due to the complexity of surveying a high number of different apartments and the low psychometric reliability of existing tools [ 37 , 38 , 39 , 40 , 41 ].…”

“…The summarised results are essential to evaluate the effectiveness of the existing design solutions and support the review of future buildings' design requirements that share the same typology, considering an evidence-based design framework (Brambilla, Lindahl, Dell'Ovo, & Capolongo, 2021;Villa et al, 2018).…”

“…As healthcare facilities shall provide support to patients on the recovery process, the assessment of healthcare facilities design requirements assume essential importance (Brambilla et al, 2021;Elf, Anåker, Marcheschi, Sigurjónsson, & Ulrich, 2020;Zhang, Tzortzopoulos, & Kagioglou, 2019).…”

“…Given the continually changing nature of the health sector, this requires consistent and continuous investments into new and updated facilities and equipment. Such investments offer scope to policymakers to shape hospital performance through strategic and financial decisions, although the precise opportunities depend on the ownership, funding and regulatory systems within which the specific facility falls [ 7 ]. Additionally, healthcare is always seen more by developers and investors as a valuable alternative asset class, with clinics, nursing homes and assisted homecare, which are reported among the European and Italian top trends in real estate investments.…”
