Validation of a general subjective well-being factor using Classical Test Theory

Abstract: Background Subjective Well-Being (SWB) is usually conceptualized in terms of an affective (i.e., judgements of biological emotional reactions and experiences) and a cognitive component (i.e., judgements of life satisfaction in relation to a psychological self-imposed ideal). Recently, researchers have suggested that judgements of harmony in life can replace or at least complement the cognitive component of SWB. Here, however, we go beyond that suggestion and propose that harmony in life should be seen as SWB’s… Show more

“…Cross-cultural validity refers to the degree to which the performance of the items on a translated or culturally adapted instrument are an adequate reflection of the performance of the items of the original version of the instrument. Internal consistency refers to the degree of interrelatedness among the items and is often assessed by Cronbach’s alpha ( Prinsen et al, 2018 ) and more recently by using coefficient Omega ( Nima et al, in press ). Reliability refers to the overall consistency of a measure, a measure has a high reliability that results in similar scores under consistent conditions; in other words, a test is reliable if it gives the same repeated result under the same conditions.…”

“…The cognitive component of subjective well-being refers to an assessment of the quality of different aspects of one's life and a general feeling of satisfaction with life (Gilman, Huebner & Laughlin, 2000). Life satisfaction, positive affect, and negative affect are Manuscript to be reviewed considered as independent phenomena (Lucas, Diner & Sue 1996) and are therefore often evaluated individually rather than as an integrated entity (for other perspectives see Nima, Cloninger, Luchesse, Sikström & Garcia, 2020;Nima, Cloninger, Persson, Sikström & Garcia, 2020;Garcia, Nima, Granjard & Cloninger, 2020).…”
