The International Code of Nomenclature of Prokaryotes (ICNP) recently underwent some major modifications regarding the higher taxonomic ranks. On the one hand, the phylum category was introduced into the ICNP, which rapidly led to the valid publication of more than forty names of phyla. On the other hand, a decision on the retroactivity of Rule 8 regarding the names of classes was made, which removed most of the nomenclatural uncertainty that had affected those names during the last decade. However, it turned out that a number of names at the ranks of class, order and family are either not validly published or are validly published but illegitimate, although these names occur in the literature and are based on the type genus of a phylum with a validly published name. A closer examination of the literature for these and similar cases indicates that the names are unavailable under the ICNP either because of minor formal errors in the original descriptions, because another name should have been adopted for the taxon when the name was proposed, because of taxonomic uncertainties that were settled in the meantime, or because the names were placed on the list of rejected names. The purpose of this article is to fill the gaps by providing the missing formal descriptions and to ensure that the resulting taxon names are attributed to the original authors who did the taxonomic work.

A Gram-stain-negative, aerobic, motile, ovoid-shaped and yellow-coloured strain, designated SYSU M79828T, was isolated from seawater collected from the South China Sea. Growth of this strain was observed at 4–37 °C (optimum, 28 °C), pH 6.0–8.0 (optimum, pH 7.0) and with 0–6% NaCl (optimum, 3.0 %, w/v). The respiratory quinone was found to be Q-10. Major fatty acid constituents were C18 : 1 ω7c/C18 : 1 ω6c, C18 : 1 ω7c11-methyl and C18 : 0 (>5 % of total). The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylcholine, phosphoglycolipid, two unidentified phospholipid, one unidentified lipid and an unidentified glycolipid. The genomic DNA G+C content was 64.5 mol%. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene sequences and core genes indicated that strain SYSU M79828T belonged to the genus Cereibacter and had the highest sequences similarity to ‘Rhodobacter xinxiangensis’ TJ48T (98.41 %). Based on 16S rRNA gene phylogeny, physiological and chemotaxonomic characterizations, we consider that strain SYSU M79828T represents a novel species of the genus Cereibacter , for which the name Cereibacter flavus sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is SYSU M79828T (=GDMCC 1.3803T=KCTC 92893T). In addition, according to the results of phylogenetic analysis and similar taxonomic characteristics, we propose that Rhodobacter alkalitolerans should be reclassified as Cereibacter alkalitolerans comb. nov.

Halalkalirubrum , red organism existing in salted and alkaline environment. Euryarchaeota / Halobacteria / Haloferacales / Halorubraceae / Halalkalirubrum The genus Halalkalirubrum consists of haloalkaliphilic archaea. Cells are pleomorphic, Gram‐stain‐negative, and approximately 0.5 μm in diameter. Cells lyse when the NaCl concentration is below 2%. Oxidase and catalase tests are positive. They can grow with 11–25% (w/v) NaCl, at pH 7.0–10.5, and between 4 and 42°C at Mg 2+ concentrations between 0 and 0.1 M. Colonies are circular, smooth, and red pigmented. H 2 S is not produced from thiosulfate. Indole formation is negative. Reduction of nitrate to nitrite is negative. Nitrite is not reduced under aerobic conditions. Anaerobic growth with nitrate, arginine, and DMSO is not observed. Cells do not hydrolyze gelatin, casein, starch, and Tweens 20, 40, 60, and 80. The following carbon sources are utilized as single carbon or energy sources for growth: glucose, maltose, lactose, sorbitol, acetate, pyruvate, lactate, fumarate, succinate, alanine, glutamate, ornithine, fructose, sorbose, xylose, mannitol, citrate, glycine, arginine, aspartate, and lysine. The major polar lipids are PG, PGP‐Me, PGS, and one unidentified glycolipid. DNA G + C content of the type strain of the type species is 58.37 mol%, a little lower than most of the closely related genera within the order Haloferacales . Known habitats are saline environments.
