Validation and reproducibility of dietary assessment methods in adolescents: a systematic literature review

Abstract: Objective: The aim of the present work was to determine what dietary assessment method can provide a valid and accurate estimate of nutrient intake by comparison with the gold standard. Design: A MEDLINE, EMBASE, ISI Web of Science, Cochrane and related references literature review was conducted on dietary assessment methods for adolescents reporting the validity and/or reproducibility values. A study quality assessment on the retrieved FFQ was carried out according to two different scoring systems, judging re… Show more

“…It is important to highlight that there is no reliable instrument to assess dietary habits with accuracy in this age range. 45 Some strengths of this study should be highlighted. The sampling method and the use of a validated instrument and questionnaires are major strengths of the study, which provide internal validity.…”

“…Estimation of portion size appears to have some advantage over using average or specified portion sizes, with higher measures of agreement between FFQ and reference method ( r 0·5–0·6) and higher correlation coefficients when assessing repeatability ( 33 ) . FFQ are seen to commonly overestimate energy intake, which is especially apparent in this population of interest ( 11 , 15 , 17 , 18 , 21 , 24 ) .…”

“…Despite the limitations of use of food frequency questionnaire, which tends to overestimate the dietary intake, this method can be used as a reliable instrument to estimate food consumption of adolescents [32]. The cross-sectional design and the possibility of residual confounding for adiposity indicate that further studies should include better measurement of possible confounding of the association between soft drinks and BP, and to use randomized design comparing exchange of regular and diet soft drinks to nonsugar sweetened beverages.…”
