Vagal Paraganglioma

Abstract: The technique used and described in this article allowed adequate exposure of the retrostyloid parapharyngeal space for the safe removal of all vagal tumors in this series. Careful consideration must be given to the likely natural progression of these tumors before committing to surgical resection. This is particularly important in patients with multifocal disease.

“…Familial VP may have a more aggressive growth pattern than a nonfamilial one [Bradshaw and Jansen, 2005]. Due to the high probability of a familial form of the disease [Spector et al, 1976;Zanoletti and Mazzoni, 2006], a detailed family history has to be obtained. If positive, genetic testing including VHL, RET, NF1, SDHD, SDHB and SDHC genes [Klein et al, 1993] is suggested for the patient and first-degree relatives.…”

“…Most authors [Biller et al, 1989;Browne et al, 1993;Miller et al, 2000;Netterville et al, 1998;Urquhart et al, 1994;Zanoletti and Mazzoni, 2006] except for van der Mey et al [1992] and Bradshaw and Jansen [2005] advocated surgical resection as the mainstay of treatment for VP. In a small number of cases, radiotherapy was performed.…”
