Vaccines and Autoimmunity—From Side Effects to ASIA Syndrome

Abstract: Since vaccines are in fact manufactured chemical compounds such as drugs, the appearance of side effects following their use is not surprising. Similarly, as the main goal of vaccines is to stimulate the immune system bringing out the production of protective antibodies, autoimmune-related side effects as a consequence of increased immune activity do not seem irrational. Fortunately, the rate of such side effects is low; however, the importance of reporting adverse events following vaccinations, understanding … Show more

“…Autoimmune responses are common complications that occur following not only BCG but also other inoculations. This leads to the creation of the specific term "autoimmune syndrome induced by adjuvant (ASIA)" (213)(214)(215)(216). Polyriboinosinic acid:polyribocytidylic acid (polyI:C) (217,218), endotoxins (219-221), and fungal peptidoglycans (222-224) activate different PRRs.…”

“…Moreover, adjuvants activate dendritic cell recruitment through chemotaxis and antigen presentation, resulting in a more robust B cell and T cell response. Ultimately, this leads to an increased adaptive immune response against the antigen [ 57 , 58 ]. To date, the pathogenic mechanism of COVID-19 vaccine-associated AIH is not known.…”

“…Nevertheless, as other vaccines, the newly developed vaccines, though with a new technology such as the mRNA, still contributed to autoimmune reactions and diseases. [48][49][50]…”
