Vaccine Potential of Mycobacterial Antigens against Asthma

Abstract: Highlights of the Study • Asthma is a global problem with significant morbidity and mortality. • T helper (Th)2 and Th17 cells and their cytokines are pathogenic, while Th1 and T regulatory (Treg) cells and their cytokines provide protection against asthma. • Mycobacterial antigens protect against asthma by shifting the immune responses from Th2 and Th17 to Th1 and/or Treg types. • The immunomodulatory property of mycobacterial antigens suggests their potential as a vaccine against asthma.

“…This, along with the emergence of drug-resistant TB, has increased the necessity for developing a better vaccine for TB [ 9 ]. In addition, an effective vaccine against TB may also protect against asthma, another non-infectious disease of high global prevalence [ 12 ].…”

“…ESAT6-Like Proteins as a Subunit Vaccine against TB and Asthma ESAT6-like proteins have been evaluated as vaccines for protection against TB and asthma [10,52]. Multimeric DNA vaccine preparations containing ESAT6-family genes generated potent and broad antigen-specific T cell responses in mice as compared to vaccination with BCG [52].…”

“…These studies suggest that the type of immune response induced by infection with M. tuberculosis or vaccination with Mycobacterium bovis BCG is protective against asthma. Hence, it is considered important to identify mycobacterial antigens that induce Th1 responses and can prevent both TB and asthma [10, 11].…”
