Vaccination coverage and immunity against hepatitis B among HIV-infected patients in South Brazil

Abstract: Evidence-based strategies to improve the hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination coverage rates might help to reduce the burden caused by co-infection with HBV and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). In this study, the aim was to evaluate the vaccination coverage and immunity against HBV among HIV-infected individuals in South Brazil, and identify factors that are associated with compliance patterns and antibody reactivity. Three hundred HIV-infected men and women were included in this survey. The patients answere… Show more

“…Of these, 58.2% (78/134) had anti-HBs (data not shown). These findings were consistent with other studies in Brazil, which also reported a low HBV vaccination coverage rate [Pereira et al, 2006;Freitas et al, 2014;Martins et al, 2015]. Notably, 56.6% of the study participants are still susceptible to HBV infection.…”

“…8,9 Despite these recommendations, in 2015, only 2 third of persons living with HIV receive at least one dose of HBV vaccine 20 y after the beginning of the HAART era. 101,102 Response rate is usually defined by a seroconversion with anti-HBs antibodies > 10UI/mL. In addition, response rates to the "classic" schedule (20 mg of HBs antigen at months 0-1-6) vaccination against HBV are lower in people living with HIV, since only 20 to 70% of HIVinfected adults were seroprotected vs 90 to 95% in non HIV infected people [11][12][13][14] The aim of this review is to summarize the currently available data regarding HBV vaccination in people living with HIV, according to their main characteristics and their vaccine and therapeutic background.…”

“…Regarding vaccination among other high-risk groups, 57% vaccination coverage among HIV-infected patients was assessed in South Brazil during 2012–13 [24]. Serological profiles among crack cocaine users in Central Brazil suggested a lower HB vaccination coverage (18%) [25].…”
