Vaccination againstKlebsiella aerogenes

Abstract: SummaryKlebsiella vaccine was prepared from strains ofKlebsiella aerogeneswith capsular types Kl, K36, K44 and K Cross (a type which cross-reactsin vitrowith sera from many klebsiella capsular types). The vaccine was extracted by dialysis and ultrafiltration from capsular material released during growth of the bacteria in a five-day batch culture.Mice given one dose of vaccine from K1a (l·0 μg/mouse) survived lethal intraperitoneal challenge of 11/11 homologous klebsiella strains four days after vaccination; 1… Show more

“…Alternative approaches to prevention and treatment of infections, such as an active and/or passive vaccine, are needed. Vaccine approaches for protection against Klebsiella infections were reported extensively in the 1980s [39][40][41][42][43][44], but the organisms predated the contemporary carbapenem-resistant ST258 strains. Morerecent studies tested immunogenicity and safety of a capsular polysaccharide vaccine against Klebsiella [45].…”

“…Immunization with the ETC of KP2 2-70 induced protection in mice against homologous KP2 2-70 organisms (Table 2). This was not surprising in light of the studies which have shown that purified CPS of K. pneumoniae can elicit the production of protective antibody (3,14,24). What was surprising was the finding that immunization with the KP2 2-70 ETC would protect experimental animals against a heterologous organism (Table 2).…”

“…What was surprising was the finding that immunization with the KP2 2-70 ETC would protect experimental animals against a heterologous organism (Table 2). Protection produced by Klebsiella capsular vaccines has, for the most part, been thought to be type specific (2), although Roe and Jones (14,24) have reported heterologous protection using Klebsiella CPS vaccines. Because all the K. pneumoniae strains that I utilized in this study possessed the serotype 1 0 antigen, it is most probable that the protective antibody was directed against the 0 (LPS) antigen.…”
