China has over 1500 open-pit mines and 5000 dumps consisting of waste rock from the mining process. Due to dump instability in an open-pit mine and its diverse foundations, landslides and mudslides frequently occur. Heaped loose waste rock and concentrated heavy rainfalls are the two important factors affecting slope stability of a dump. Using the high Dump II within the Nanfen Open-Pit Iron Mine with a slope height of 300 m as a case study, this paper first proposes a physical model similarity ratio according to the on-site engineering geological survey data. The governing principles of deformation in the shallow dump layers in terms of different heaped loads and rainfall were then determined using fiber optic sensing to conduct an experimental study on the monitoring of the dump stability with an indoor physical model. Experimental results confirm that the amount of rainfall and heaped load has a great impact on the landslide in a dump. With an increase in the amount of material heaped onto the pile, the place between two heaped load points is squeezed and slowly deformed. As rainfall begins, the deformation of the rock-soil mass is significant, and constantly increasing rainfall intensity is accompanied by a dangerous sliding surface. Finally, the FLAC3D method was used to simulate the deformation features in the shallow part of Dump II under different heaped load conditions and verify the experimental results of the indoor physical model. By comparing the physical model experiments and numerical simulation results, we propose monitoring the stability of Dump II using this fiber optic sensing technology and provide the scientific basis for stability monitoring of similar dumps to detect the early warning signs of mudslides or landslides.

Abstract. Gravel cushions are widely used to absorb the impact energy of falling rocks in open-pit mines. A particularly important application is to enhance the energy-absorbing capacity of rockfall sheds. In this paper, we study how varying the thickness and particle size of a gravel cushion influences its energy-consumption and buffering effects. We performed a series of laboratory drop tests by dropping blocks from a fixed height onto cushions of different thicknesses and particle sizes. The results indicate that, for a given impact energy, the cushion thickness has a strong influence on the measured coefficient of restitution (COR) and therefore impact pressure. Additional tests were performed to study how the radius of the block and the height it is dropped from affect the measured COR. This showed that as the movement height of the block is increased the COR also increases, and blocks with larger radii exhibit a larger variability in measured COR. Finally, we investigated the influence of rockfall block radius, r, movement height, H , cushion thickness, h, and particle size, d, on the COR and the damage depth, L, of the cushion. The test results reveal that the cushion thickness is the primary design parameter, controlling not only COR, but also the stability of the cushion material. The results provide a theoretical and practical basis for the design of gravel cushions for rockfall protection.

Due to the frequent occurrence of geological disasters, such as geological faults, tectonic activities, and local activities, the study of a cable structure capable of resisting large deformations and of absorbing energy is investigated. e plane length is increased step by step based on the deformation and energy absorption values of the original NPR anchor cable model. ree kinds of two-stage constant resistance bodies are designed following the three principles: first-stage friction plus second-stage expansion, primary expansion plus secondary expansion, and first-stage expansion plus second-stage friction. Moreover, a giant NPR anchor cable with extraordinary mechanical properties is developed. Via a theoretical analysis and laboratory static tensile tests on traditional NPR and giant NPR anchor cables, their force characteristics, constant resistance, and fluctuation trends are related to the size and the structure of the constant resistance body. In addition, the most remarkable improvement takes place in the cables' deformation and energy absorption properties. e deformation increases from 1000-2000 mm to 3000-4000 mm, while the energy absorption value increases from 4.21 × 10 5 -1.09 × 10 6 J to 3.2 × 10 6 J. e constant resistance value is also effectively enhanced to 550-723.7 kN. is provides a reliable technical support for their application in deep geological faults.
