V. Gerovasileiou et al.: New Mediterranean Biodiversity Records (July, 2017)

Abstract: This Collective Article presents information on 37 taxa belonging to 6 Phyla and extending from the western Mediterranean to the Levantine Sea. The new records were found in 10 countries as follows: Algeria: first reports on the presence of the fish species Lesueurigobius sanzi, L. friesii, L. suerii and Luvarus imperiali; France: first record of the alien nudibranch Godiva quadricolor; Italy: first record of an adult-sized red emperor snapper Lutjanus sebae from the southern Tyrrhenian Sea; first record of th… Show more

“…The increasing incidences of fish-farm attacks by the Mediterranean monk seal in recent years were also reported by fish farmers in the Muğla region. The last study also verified this phenomenon with six sightings of monk seals from three fish farms in Muğla and a single specimen from one fish farm in the Izmir region (Gerovasileiou et al 2017). Previously, a total of 40 attacks on 11 fish farms in the Turkish Aegean Sea between 1992 and 2000, which resulted in damage to cage nets and the escape of farmed fishes, have been reported by Güçlüsoy and Savas (2003).…”

“…Although it is of high interest, the marine biodiversity of Cyprus is poorly known especially concerning marine invertebrates. The number of decapods recorded until recently from Cyprus reached 161 species (e.g., Gerovasileiou et al, 2017;Ulman et al, 2017). As it was previously noted the low recorded number of species from Cyprus is primarily attributed to the fact that there is a lack of knowledge due to inadequacy in systematic sampling in a wide range of marine habitats.…”

“…The UBPC started as a biotechnology multi-use infrastructure and the instruments that were installed therein were for the needs of the local environmental monitoring. However, because of the shallow nature of the temperature monitoring installations, and since the location of the UBPC is in a key-spot of biodiversity changes due to Lessepsian Migration and may be prone to climatic changes [35][36][37], it was thought this time series could also potentially be useful for satellite coastal SST validation, and thus, it was decided to exploit the vertical temperature loggers four-year time series for a comparison with the MODIS Aqua and Terra SST data.…”
