V‐band millimeter‐wave microstrip to rectangular waveguide transition

Abstract: This article proposes a novel millimeter‐wave microstrip (MSL) to WR 12 standard rectangular waveguide transitions. These dissimilar structures are interconnected via a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW). The MSL and the SIW are integrated on the same ceramic substrate of 9.9 relative permittivity and 125 μm thickness. The MSL was first transformed into an air‐filled rectangular waveguide, and then a stepped impedance or horn transformer was used to match the WR12 standard rectangular waveguide. The central … Show more

“…The metallized via-holes of the SIW allow reducing unwanted substrate waves and shielding the transition from backside radiation leakage. The mechanism of the electromagnetic field matching for this arrangement has been detailed in [ 37 ]. The transition is fabricated in a very thin high-permittivity ceramic substrate ( , m) as the other parts of the sensor radar.…”

“…The quasi-TEM to TE 10 -like mode conversion is realized by different methods. Two sections of transmission lines with a 3λ/4 trapezoidal transformer are used for transition in [11], a tapered MSL and substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) with trapezoidal metalized holes are used to provide robust assembly in [12]. Via holes are needed in both references, which will increase fabrication complexity.…”

“…However, it requires a tapered dielectric [13] or a rectangular shaped dielectric [14] to transform to the RWG, and the extra section will lead to the increase in circuit length. For the transition from the RWG with a small height to standard RWG, stepped transformers [11,[13][14][15][16], patch antenna [11], and horn adapter [12] are proposed in order to match the impedance. Compared with ridge waveguide transformers, these transformers are easier to process in THz bands.…”

“…The MMIC chips are placed in rectangular cuts on ceramics, on the top of the same metallic fixture, allowing thermal dissipation and easy wire-bonding with MHMIC components, which are practically at the same height. Initial designs and circuit characterization results of several MHMIC passive circuits on very thin ceramic substrate, designed for advanced millimeter wave systems operating in 60 -90 GHz band, have been published few years ago [11]. www.videleaf.com This paper presents novel circuit designs, together with major improvements obtained in fabrication and characterization process in recent years.…”
