“…Notably, none of our participants presented with clinical characteristics suggestive for ocular toxoplasmosis. The high prevalence of herpetic uveitis, mainly VZV, is most likely due to the high herpes virus infection rate in the Mopani district 13 14. Congruent with an earlier study from Congo, demonstrating that 38 of 89 uveitis cases among HIV-infected individuals were VZV induced,13 VZV was the most common viral cause of infectious uveitis in our study.…”

“…5 Anterior uveitis seems to be a more common presentation of other causes of inflammation of the uveal tract in HIV-positive patients, such as herpes zoster (HZ) ophthalmicus, tuberculosis, CMV infection and toxoplasmosis. 20 Depigmentation of the peripheral retina with preservation of the central visual acuity is a known side effect of dideoxyinosine, 2 seen most commonly in children. 4 Iridocyclitis due to Reiter's syndrome, is another form of uveitis reported to occur more commonly in patients with HIV infection than those without it.…”

“…Numerous studies of the pattern of IU have been published, showing similarities and distinct differences in the clinical characteristics, etiologic profile, and course of the disease [3][4][5][6]. Data on IU from developing countries are scarce [3,4,7,8], and there is a lack of studies from the North African and Middle East region [9].…”
