Uveitis: a sight-threatening disease which can impact all systems

Abstract: Uveitis describes a group of conditions characterised by intraocular inflammation. The term uveitis technically describes inflammation of the uvea which comprises the iris, ciliary body and choroid, however now encompasses inflammation of adjacent intraocular structures such as the retina, vitreous and optic nerve. Uveitis is a significant cause of blindness worldwide, but its impact is generally underappreciated due to a lack of awareness and understanding of the condition among the public and most non-ophtha… Show more

“…Autoimmune uveitis, an inflammation of the uvea (iris, ciliary body, and choroid tissue) and even adjacent tissues (vitreous humor, optic nerve and retina), can occur either alone or secondary to systemic syndrome [84]. The autoimmune causes are mainly due to inappropriate immune responses mediated by pathogenic T cells [85]. Pathogenic Th17 cells and their related inflammatory cytokines coordinately act as potent inducers of tissue inflammation [86,87].…”

“…Uveitis describes inflammation of the uvea, which contains the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. As intraocular inflammation can affect surrounding tissues, clinical uveitis may comprise inflammation of the retina, optic disc, and vitreous [ 10 ]. Uveitis may be the result of infectious (e.g., human herpes virus, tuberculosis, syphilis), non-infectious (mostly autoimmune or autoinflammatory), or masquerade (e.g., lymphoma) causes [ 11 ].…”

“…Uveitis is a diverse group of potentially sight-threatening intraocular inflammatory diseases with an infectious or autoimmune etiology [1]. It is an important cause of blind eye diseases and is accompanied by aggravating pain and discomfort, which seriously affect the patient's quality of life and have a severe socioeconomic impact [2].…”
