UV-Tunable Biobased Pressure-Sensitive Adhesives Containing Piperonyl Methacrylate

Abstract: Novel waterborne pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSAs) with biobased contents up to 71% and UV-light-tunable features have been developed using piperonyl methacrylate (PIPEMA) as a hard monomer. The biobased monomer was synthesized from piperonyl alcohol (derived from black pepper), and its homopolymer was fully characterized. Emulsion polymerization was chosen as a sustainable strategy to copolymerize piperonyl methacrylate together with biobased 2-octyl acrylate to produce high-solid-content latexes for pressu… Show more

“…Biobased 2-octyl acrylate (2OA) was kindly supplied by Arkema (France), and both isobornyl methacrylate (Visiomer Terra IBOMA) and isobornyl acrylate (Visiomer Terra IBOA) were kindly supplied by Evonik Industries (Essen, Germany). Piperonyl methacrylate (PIPEMA) was synthesized according to the method reported elsewhere . Acrylic and methacrylic acid (AA, MAA), 2-ethylhexyl thioglycolate (2EHTG), and potassium persulfate (KPS) were purchased from Sigma-Aldrich (Saint-Louis, MO, U.S.A.).…”

“…IBOMA comes from pine resin and has a biocontent of 71%. Both monomers have been previously used for the fabrication of biobased Pressure Sensitive Adhesives (PSA) [16][17][18][19] and coatings [20], producing polymers with superior hydrophobic character than conventional MMA/BA copolymers.…”

“…As such, care must be taken into account for other potential impacts of process strategy on the balance of available reaction mechanisms. Crosslinking during polymerization to achieve a target network topology is, in fact, quite sensitive to process conditions, with macromolecular architecture a key design property in applications such as dental materials, paints and coatings, and adhesives [ 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 ]. For multiphase polymers, such as latex, strategies to tune polymer properties must consider multiple length scales from the individual chains, through to a large ensemble of chains in the form of a structured particle morphology, and finally in end-use application macroscopically.…”
