UV‐curable systems containing perfluoropolyether structures: Synthesis and characterisation

Abstract: The synthesis of new functionalised macromers containing perfluoropolyether structures (PFPE) is reported. They are obtained by reaction of bis‐CH2OH terminated PFPE with isocyanato‐ethyl methacrylate (EIM), giving rise to the formation of perfluoropolyether bisurethane methacrylate (PFEUMA) oligomers. The products are characterised by NMR and FTIR analyses. The thermal behaviour reveals two amorphous phases, corresponding to the fluorinated and the hydrogenated moieties, while a crystalline phase can be prese… Show more

“…In particular, despite the heterogeneous nature of this system as inferred from DSC analysis, the new UV-curable coating appears highly transparent (transmittance over 99%), clearly indicating that the phase segregation between fl uorinated and urethane moieties is in the submicrometric range, in accordance with the published literature. [ 26 ] These results confi rm the excellent optical transparency of the new fl uorinated UV-curable material.…”

“…11 In this context we studied the thermal, mechanical and optical properties of UV-cured acrylic films prepared from fluorinated oligomers such as modified perfluoropolyether. 12 Another research line concerns the selective modification of the surface properties of UV-curable resins by copolymerizing them with low amount of reactive acrylic monomers behaving like surfactants. [13][14][15] Even at very low concentration they are able to deeply change the film sur-face by selectively enriching its outermost layers as a function of the monomer structure, its concentration and the curing conditions.…”

“…PFPE-based fluoropolymer (PFPE-DMA) was synthesized based on the work of Priola et al [7][8][9]. The reaction involved the methacrylate functionalization of a commercially available PFPE diol (M n = 4000 g/mol, Solvay Solexis) with 2-isocyanatoethyl methacrylate (Hesita Laboratories).…”

“…The synthesis and curing properties of UV-curable fluoropolymers containing perfluoropolyether (PFPE) structures have been reported [7][8][9]. The UV-cured PFPE-based fluoropolymers exhibit low surface energy, low modulus, low toxicity, and high gas permeability.…”
