UV-C treatment on physiological response of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) during low temperature storage

Abstract: The storage of potato tuber (Solanum tuberosum L.) at low temperatures minimizes sprouting and disease but can cause cold-induced sweetening (CIS), which leads to the production of the cancerogenic substance acrylamide during the frying processing. The aim of this research was to investigate the effects of UV-C treatment on CIS in cold stored potato tuber. 'Atlantic' potatoes were treated with UV-C for an hour and then stored at 4°C up to 28 days. The UV-C treatment significantly prevented the increase of malo… Show more

“…Thus, the usage of this radiation would avoid costly manipulations related to microalgae biomass harvesting and/or reduce the energy costs associated to the manipulation of their biomolecule yield and biomass composition [5]. UV-C has enhancing effects on the biomass composition of microalgae species with industrial applications as Haematococcus pluvialis and Dunaliella salinaenhancing lipids and carotenoids synthesis- [6], and crop species -by the starch accumulation- [19][20][21], remaining the molecular mechanisms behind these responses unknown. The closeness of H. pluvialis and D. salina to the chlorophyte model Chlamydomonas, with its multiple available genomic/proteomic resources and simpler plant-like UV-A/B signaling pathways, makes this microalga the selected model for the characterization of this response.…”

“…The studies were conducted on potato tubers of the variety Innovator. The Innovator potato is one of the most popular varieties used for French-fries production by European, also Polish, companies [19]. It is an early type B variety, with regular tubers round and oval in shape, with shallow eyes, and medium content of starch (14.6 %).…”

“…The total reducing sugar content in the UV-C-treated tubers was 1.65 ... 2.02 fold lower compared to the untreated control after storage at +4 °С for 28 days. Lin et al [27] suggest that the UV-C treatment possibly regulates the gene cascade in potato tuber (sucrose phosphate synthase, invertase inhibitor 1/3, and invertase 1) that reduced accumulation of reducing sugars and prevented oxidative injury in potato cells.…”
