UV-B Phototherapy of Psoriasis

Abstract: The effect of ultraviolet-B light provided by TL-12 fluorescent lamps was investigated in 45 patients with psoriasis vulgaris. 33 (73.3%) of the 45 patients showed considerable and rapid improvement during UV-B therapy. The initial (clearing) phase (4 irradiations a week) required an average of 23 irradiations (range: 9–33). During maintenance treatment, irradiation once every 1–5 weeks proved adequate in 64.4% of the patients.

“…In mice, artificially administered UVB induces skin tumors (Wulf et al, 1994). Although UVB is widely used as a treatment for moderate-to-severe psoriasis and other skin conditions, the carcinogenicity of therapeutic UVB in humans is not well quantified (Boer et al, 1980;Anderson et al, 1984). Based on the emission spectra of broadband UVB lamps and the sun, Nachtwey and Rundel (1981) estimated that broadband UVB might be twice as carcinogenic per minimal erythemal dose as the sun.…”

“…Remission times were prolonged using maintenance therapy. [26][27][28] The advent of NB-UVB lamps improved the use of UVB therapy in psoriasis and is widely considered to be preferable to BB-UVB therapy. NB-UVB use was initially popularized in the United Kingdom and Europe in the mid-1980s, and became available in the United States approximately one decade later.…”

“…In another trial, 90% of psoriatic patients experienced complete disease clearance with BB-UVB combined with petrolatum three times weekly for 3-13 weeks (12). Remission times have also been prolonged when using BB-UVB for maintenance therapy (13). With the advent of NB-UVB bulbs, several small clinical studies have demonstrated increased efficacy and more rapid clearance of psoriatic plaques with NB-UVB compared to BB-UVB phototherapy (14)(15)(16)(17).…”
