UV and X-ray monitoring of AG draconis during the 1994/1995 outbursts

Abstract: Abstract. The recent 1994-1995 active phase of AG Draconis has given us for the first time the opportunity to follow the full X-ray behaviour of a symbiotic star during two successive outbursts and to compare with its quiescence X-ray emission. With ROSAT observations we have discovered a remarkable decrease of the X-ray flux during both optical maxima, followed by a gradual recovering to the pre-outburst flux. In the UV the events were characterized by a large increase of the emission line and continuum fluxe… Show more

“…Similar scenarios were used to explain X-ray variability in other SSS (e.g. AG Dra, Greiner et al 1996). However, we note, that in those cases usually an anti-correlation of X-ray and optical luminosity is observed, whereas in the case of SMC 3 these two are clearly correlated.…”

“…Satisfactory fits to X-ray observations, corresponding to very wide range of possible parameters, were found by many authors (e.g. Greiner et al , 1997;Asai et al , 1998;Ness et al , 2008;Sturm et al , 2011). Such the ambiguity in the inferred parameters is probably caused by fitting only a very small part of the total SSS spectrum.…”

“…Greiner et al (1997) modelled the ROSAT PSPC observations during quiescent phase between 1992 April 16 to 1993 May 12. Using the blackbody model for fixed galactic value of N H = 3.15 × 10 20 cm −2 , they obtained kT = 14.5 eV (168300 K) and L h = (9.5 ± 1.5) × 10 36 (d/2.5 kpc) 2 erg s −1 .…”

“…Our values of 150 -230 kK are comparable to those indicated in other symbiotic systems with the observed supersoft X-ray and far-UV fluxes generated by the WD's pseudophotosphere. For example, AG Dra (115-180 kK, Greiner et al 1997;Skopal et al 2009a), RR Tel (150-180 kK, González-Riestra et al 2013), and LIN 358 (250±10 kK, Skopal 2015.…”
