UV and gamma ray induced thermoluminescence properties of cubic Gd2O3:Er3+ phosphor

Gadolinium-doped Y 2 O 3 nanophosphor was synthesized by a solid-state reaction method, which could be used for large-scale production of phosphors. The structure of the phosphor sample was characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, field emission gun scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The particle size was calculated from Scherer's formula. X-ray diffraction showed a grain size of 35-55 nm, in good agreement with the scanning electron microscopy image. The synthesized sample showed good morphology and connectivity, with grains and formation of a nano-sized prepared sample. The diffraction pattern was measured by transmission electron microscopy with a selected area diffraction pattern. The prepared phosphor was also examined by thermoluminescence; to record the glow curve, 1 mg phosphor was irradiated with ultraviolet at 254 nm at a fixed heating rate of 7 • C s −1 . The sample showed a well-resolved peak at 99 • C for 1 mol% of Gd 3+ . A lower temperature peak showed less stability and more fading of the prepared sample. A thermoluminescence glow curve gives information about trapping parameters such as activation energy and trap depth, order of kinetics and frequency. All the kinetics were calculated by the peak shape method.

Limestone CGCD EDX a b s t r a c t The paper reports themoluminescence glow curve analysis of UV (ultraviolet), b (beta) and g (gamma) induced limestone collected from Amarnath holy cave. The collected natural sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique and crystallite size calculated by Scherer's formula. Surface morphology and particle size was calculated by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) study. Effect of annealing temperature on collected lime stone examined by TL glow curve study. The limestone was irradiated by UV radiation (254 nm source) and the TL glow curve recorded for different UV exposure time.For beta irradiation Sr 90 source was used and is shows intense peak at 256 C with a shoulder peak at higher temperature range. For gamma radiation Co 60 source and TL glow curve recorded for different doses of gamma. The kinetic parameters calculation was performed for different glow curve by computerized glow curve deconvolution (CGCD) technique. The chemical composition of natural limestone was analyzed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS).

Influence of Er³⁺ concentration on the photoluminescence characteristics and excitation mechanism of Gd₂O₃:Er³⁺ phosphor synthesized via a solid‐state reaction method

An Er(3+) -doped phosphor of Gd2O3(Gd2O3:Er(3+)) was prepared using a conventional solid-state reaction method. The structure and particle size were determined from X-ray powder diffraction measurements. The average particle size of the phosphor was in between 20 and 50 nm. The particle size and structure of the phosphor were further confirmed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Luminescence spectra were recorded under excitation wavelengths of 275, 380, 515 and 980 nm. The visible upconversion and downconversion luminescence spectra of the Gd2O3:Er(3+) phosphor were investigated as a function of Er(3+) ion concentration. The upconverted emission at 980 nm excitation shows enhanced red emission with respect to green emission as the dopant concentration increased. Similar results were observed for downconversion emission under 275 and 380 nm excitation wavelengths. The mechanisms responsible for populating the (4)S3/2 and (4)F9/2 levels, for green and red emissions, respectively, are different for different excitations and for different concentrations of Er(3+).
