The demand for wound care products, especially advanced and active wound care products is huge. In this study, gellan gum (GG) and virgin coconut oil (VCO) were utilized to develop microemulsion-based hydrogel for wound dressing materials. A ternary phase diagram was constructed to obtain an optimized ratio of VCO, water, and surfactant to produce VCO microemulsion. The VCO microemulsion was incorporated into gellan gum (GG) hydrogel (GVCO) and their chemical interaction, mechanical performance, physical properties, and thermal behavior were examined. The stress-at-break (σ) and Young’s modulus (YM) of GVCO hydrogel films were increased along with thermal behavior with the inclusion of VCO microemulsion. The swelling degree of GVCO hydrogel decreased as the VCO microemulsion increased and the water vapor transmission rate of GVCO hydrogels was comparable to commercial dressing in the range of 332–391 g m−2 d−1. The qualitative antibacterial activities do not show any inhibition against Gram-negative (Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis) bacteria. In vivo studies on Sprague–Dawley rats show the wound contraction of GVCO hydrogel is best (95 ± 2%) after the 14th day compared to a commercial dressing of Smith and Nephew Opsite post-op waterproof dressing, and this result is supported by the ultrasound images of wound skin and histological evaluation of the wound. The findings suggest that GVCO hydrogel has the potential to be developed as a biomedical material.

Segundo relatado por Jamwal et al (2020) [21], a adulteração com parafina é comum em países do sudeste asiático, e a mistura de OCV com 18 a 20% de parafina não altera notavelmente o sabor ou a cor do produto, mas a mistura pode trazer riscos à saúde humana, uma vez que pode causar distúrbios do intestino, gânglios linfáticos e fígado, e até mesmo câncer.…”

Os óleos vegetais encapsulados podem ser extraídos a frio e ter como origem fontes não convencionais, reconhecidos por preservarem compostos bioativos característicos e, alguns deles, serem fontes de ácidos graxos essenciais. No entanto, são produtos geralmente onerosos e por este motivo, passíveis de adulteração com óleos de menor qualidade. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a identidade e a contaminação por hidrocarbonetos policíclicos aromáticos (HPAs) de óleos encapsulados. Foram avaliadas catorze amostras, de diferentes tipos e marcas, comercializadas na cidade de São Paulo. Os ensaios realizados incluíram perfil de ácidos graxos e HPAs [benzo(a)antraceno, criseno, benzo(b)fluoranteno e benzo(a)pireno]. Duas amostras (14%) foram consideradas insatisfatórias quanto aos perfis de ácidos graxos, incluindo óleos de coco e borragem. Quanto aos HPAs, as concentrações para o benzo(a)pireno variaram de <LQ a 0,51 µg/kg e, para a soma dos 4 HPAs, de <LQ a 5,83 µg/kg. A avaliação e monitoramento destes óleos encapsulados deve ser constante, considerando o frequente consumo pela população e a possibilidade dos mesmos estarem adulterados.

The outbreak of COVID virus resulted not only in massive human deaths but also created huge waste disposal issues. Proper disposal of COVID waste is necessary. The conversion of these wastes into value‐added products such as syngas is beneficial to overcome energy scarcity issues. The Indian high ash coal (HAC) is nonreactive, and the co‐utilisation of HAC with these plastic wastes is advantageous to produce high‐quality syngas. In the present study, thermal treatment of overall gowns (OG) used during COVID by pyrolysis and gasification process was carried out under inert and reactive conditions with and without HAC at various operating temperatures. During pyrolysis, oil with a yield of 17% was produced under N2 conditions at 900°C, whereas a reduced oxygen content in the oil was observed (absence of C–O) under CO2 conditions. The co‐gasification of OG with high ash coal in the fuel mixture resulted in the heating value of syngas as high as 8.56 MJ nm−3. The calorific value of the syngas increases by 51.8% when OG content in the fuel mixture is increased to 20% because hydrocarbon content in syngas increases by 8.73 times. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that by adding OG, gasification initiated 35°C earlier as compared to HAC. The solid residue obtained by co‐gasification contains calcium in the form of CaO and CaCO3 due to COVID‐19 waste. The global warming potential of the syngas generated is reduced by 32% with the addition of OG to 20%.
