Utilization of treated coffee husk as low-cost bio-sorbent for adsorption of methylene blue

Abstract: Dyes and pigments have been used in many industries for colorization purpose but they pose hazards to the environment and end users of water. Therefore, it is important to remove this pollutant from waste water before their final disposal. This study aimed to investigate the removal of methylene blue by cost effective, ecofriendly, high-efficiency bio-sorbent from activated coffee husk. The process was carried out using chemical activation (H3PO4) process. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and surface an… Show more

“…Coffee husk exhibited a high fixed carbon content of 20.9 %, indicating a high degree of graphitization and a low number of functional groups. [23] The high heating value (HHV) was found to be 18.3 MJkg -1 , which could be competitive with the heating value of wood (typically in the range of 17.9-20.5 MJkg -1 ). [24] These results show that coffee husk has good energy properties; hence it could be a suitable feedstock for thermochemical conversion processes.…”

“…The precursor material used for the production of AC such as coal and lignocellulosic material from biomass are expensive to procure and often need to be imported. There has been a growing interest wherein the feasibility of using alternative lignocellulosic biomass from agricultural activities such as coffee residues (Ayalew & Aragaw, 2020;Gonçalves et al, 2013).…”
