“…The properties of amylase, trypsin and aminopeptidase from S bipunctata are similar to those from other insects (see references in Vonk and Western, 1984;Applebaum, 1985;Ferreira and Terra, 1986;Baker, 1989;Lemos and Terra, 1992 Baker, 1991;Jordão and Terra, 1991 (Santos and Terra, 1986;Terra et al, 1987). This finding lends further support to the assertion (Terra, 1988(Terra, , 1990 (Sakagami et al, 1965).…”

“…Recent studies suggest that it is likely that larval Lepidoptera, and phytophagous insects in general, do digest some cellulose and more fibre than previously thought (Terra et al, 1987;Pant & Ramana, 1989;Ferreira et al, 1992), although most studies focus on cellulose digestibility and not overall fibre digestibility. This study does not identify the constituent of fibre that is being digested although it is likely that some cellulose and hemicellulose are being digested (Terra et al, 1987;Ferreira et al, 1992). The presence of cellulose digesting enzymes has been reported for some leaf feeding Lepidoptera (Pant & Ramana, 1989) although production of these enzymes is uncommon among animals (Martin, 1991).…”

“…The technique used by Terra et al (1987) to examine the nutritional ecology of E. ello and by Ferreira et al (1992) to examine digestion in the grasshopper Aracris flavolineata De Geer (Orthoptera: Acrididae) provides significantly more information about the digestion of particular cell wall components of plants.
