Weeds constitute a huge group of undesirable plants, widespread throughout the world. They represent a big problem for most farmers, who implement different methods to fight against them. Thanks to their wide occurrence, weeds however, can be an excellent indicator of the quality of soil and the whole environment where they are present. In this paper, we present the impact of four alkylimidazolium chlorides with a natural terpene component introduced into the soil: (1R,2S,5R)-(-)-menthol and alkyl substituents containing 1, 4, 9 or 12 carbon atoms, on the growth and development of selected weed species. Compounds with the highest phytotoxic activity towards gallant soldier, white goosefoot and common sorrel were chlorides with methyl and butyl substituents, while compounds with nonyl and dodecyl substituents demonstrated a weak effect on these weeds. Phytotoxicity of the salts tested was largely dependent on the applied concentration of the compound and the genetic make-up of plant species used in the experiment. This was reflected in the inhibition of plants' length and their roots, as well as changes in the content of dry matter and photosynthetic pigments.

Starch‐based films and food coatings: An overview

Native and modified starches have received considerable attention for biodegradable films formulation due to their completely biodegradable nature, edible characteristics, and low cost. Development and characterization of starch films obtained by: (i) casting, (ii) blown extrusion and (iii) the thermo-compression moulding process are described. The rheological properties of filmogenic suspensions, the barrier properties, and the mechanical resistance of the obtained films are reported. Addition of specific additives to the formulations modifies the film functionality transforming them into active materials. Diffusion of antimicrobial agents such as potassium sorbate from the active starch film, as well as their efficacy in dairy products is discussed. Likewise, reinforcing agents lead to composite materials with improved mechanical resistance. Starch-based materials show higher permeability to carbon dioxide than to oxygen, which is useful to control the respiration rate of fruits and vegetables. The application of active starch-based coatings to strawberries and Brussels sprouts in order to prolong their refrigerated storage life is analyzed. A detailed overview on the formulation and performance of starch-based films employing industrial and lab-scale methods, as well as the application of starch coatings to improve food quality is presented, with the aim of analyzing the possibility of development and application of such materials.

Low Transition Temperature Mixtures (LTTM) Containing Sugars as Potato Starch Plasticizers

For the first time, low transition temperature mixtures – LTTM based on sugars: fructose (Fruc), glucose (Gluc) or sucrose (Suc), and glycerol (G) are prepared, characterized by DSC and applied as potato starch plasticizers. Sugar‐based LTTM exhibits good plasticizing activity leading to homogenous transparent, flexible thermoplastic starch (TPS) materials. Mechanical, dynamic mechanical (DMA), X‐ray diffractometry (XRD), and FTIR analysis of obtained TPS/LTTM films are performed for their relative comparison. For TPS/Fruc:G films, tensile strength (TS) and Young's modulus (YM) decreases and elongation at break (EB) increases with increase of G. However, for TPS/Gluc:G molar ratio of Gluc to G did not affect significantly on films mechanical properties. Comparing two monosugars, i.e., Gluc and Fruc, TPS/Gluc:G materials exhibit slightly higher TS (4.8–5.8 MPa) but lower EB (44–61%) in comparison with TPS/Fruc:G films (TS 3.2–5.0 MPa; EB 90–115%) at 25 °C, RH 50%. LTTM as whole mixture of components led to TPS products with not only higher TS, YM but even EB in comparison with films where sugars and G were added separately into starch. Mutual interaction between sugar, polyol and starch is confirmed by DMA. XRD reveals that starch with LTTM undergone amorphization and TPS/Suc:G 1:6 is the most amorphous among investigated TPS films.
