Utilization of Renewable Energy Sources in Road Transport in EU Countries—TOPSIS Results

Abstract: The primary aim of this study was to assess and compare EU countries in terms of the use of renewable energy sources in road transport. The following research tasks were undertaken to realize this aim: (1) a review of the literature concerning the negative externalities in road transport, the concept of sustainable development, and legal regulations referring to the utilization of renewable energy sources; (2) presentation of changes in energy consumption (both traditional and renewable) in road transport in E… Show more

“…Eleven EU member states managed to reduce CO 2 emissions intensity by more than 6%. Among them were also the Visegrad Group countries [20]. These actions, while positive, show that the decarbonisation of the road transport sector in EU countries is taking place too slowly in relation to the objectives of the European Green Deal and the goals for member countries to achieve zero emissions in 2035 and climate neutrality in 2050.…”

“…Transport is the bloodstream of the economy and the foundation of society's development [1,2], and therefore, it requires setting directions for improvement toward sustainable development [3,4]. This improvement is indicated in the context of resource use by transport [5]. There is also a strong link between economic development and the continual increase in energy consumption on a global scale [6][7][8].…”

“…With continued economic and population growth, specifically the world population increasing sharply from 1 billion in 1900 to 7.6 billion at present, we are noticing conventional energy overdevelopment and environmental deterioration [1,2]. As a major global issue, sustainable development is heavily linked to the pattern of economic growth [3].…”
