Utilization of Plastic Waste and Its Management: A Mini-Review

Abstract

Developing countries including India suffer significant environmental issues as a result of plastic waste generation and insufficient waste collection, transportation, treatment, and disposal that adversely impact the ecosystem, human health and sustainable future. In India, plastic waste is generated at a rate of 26,000 tonnes per day (TPD). Even though 60% of India's plastic is recycled, the country still has 9,400 TPD of plastic waste. This paper focuses on a mini-review of the recent available literature on the utilization of plastic wastes in India and its management. The analysis offers a comparison of plastic consumption across India's states. Effects of plastic waste on the different environments (soil, water, and marine) and human health are also elucidated. To reduce plastic use and address the problem of plastic waste accumulation, efforts must be made to examine the usage of renewable raw materials in innovative goods as a result of recent technological advancements.
