PurposeThe key purpose of this study is to investigate the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) among farmers in Qena Governorate of Upper Egypt farmers' use of ICTs in Qena Governorate, one of Upper Egypt's largest agricultural governorates.Design/methodology/approachA semi-structured questionnaire survey, as well as some personal interviews, was used to collect detailed information about farmers' use or non-use of ICTs. The study's participants included 131 farmers.FindingsRespondents were mostly males who were married and had an average level of education and age. The majority of respondents had 26–30 years of work experience. The majority of them used ICTs for 4–6 h per day. All respondents used ICTs to learn about new agricultural products, increase land productivity, gather market information and learn about livestock. Mobile phones, social media and the internet were identified as the most useful and simple-to-use technologies by all respondents. Illiteracy, a lack of knowledge and awareness and the cost of CITs were discovered to have an impact on respondents' use of information.Originality/valueThe significance of this study stems from the hotly debated topic of the need to use technology tools in agriculture, whether for agricultural work or communication with others. ICTs provide a variety of new ways to communicate and exchange information and knowledge.

The aim of this study was to examine the small-scale chicken farmer’s use of social media platforms to access market information in Arusha city, Tanzania. Data were collected between June and August 2022 from 260 small-scale chicken farmers (SSCFs). Among these, 130 were Kuku Uchumi and 130 were non-Kuku Uchumi beneficiaries selected using stratified and simple random technique. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using questionnaire and key informant interview guide, respectively. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, and binary logistic regression model were used to analyse quantitative data. On the other hand, qualitative data were transcribed from audio and translated from Kiswahili to English, and extracts were developed. The study found that chicken price, egg tray price, the number of chicken, and egg trays needed in the market and chicken market status were the main chicken market information accessed by SSCFs through social media. WhatsApp was reported as the primary social media used by SSCFs to access market information. The findings also, indicate statistically significant differences between Kuku Uchumi and non-Kuku Uchumi beneficiaries in using social media to access market information. The study concludes that using social media to access market information assists SSCFs in finding markets for their chicken and eggs, and recommends to other SSCFs to use social media. Furthermore, Kuku Uchumi's modes of training and mobilization may be advocated by extension agents in other areas

The study examined socio-economic factors influencing the choice of communication media for accessing agricultural information among gender categories, that is, men, women, and youths in Kilosa and Mvomero districts of Tanzania. Data were collected from a sample of 240 selected farmers. Information was collected using structured and semi-structured interviews, and document reviews. The collected data were analyzed through descriptive, inferential and qualitative approaches. A multinomial logit was estimated to identify socio-economic factors such as age of a farmer in farming, education level, types of assets owned, farmer’s marital status, income and nature of farming enterprise in influencing the choice of communication media for accessing agricultural information among men, women, and youths. Results showed that the choice of either television or video or mobile phones or Internet or leaflets or booklets over radio was not statistically gender based. In addition, the choice of leaflets and television by famers over radio in rural areas was influenced by their education level and income at 1% and 3% level of significance respectively. The increase of 1.5 years in schooling influences the farmer to choose leaflets than radio. Similarly, increase of income by 0.3% influences him/her to choose television rather than radio. The income enables the farmer to increase his/her television purchasing power and meet related operational costs by 2%. Generally, the study concludes that the choice between television, video, mobile phones, Internet, leaflets, or booklets over radio was not influenced by gender. However, farmers with low education and income levels did not choose leaflets and television, respectively. The study recommends that policy-makers should formulate appropriate strategies for motivating farmers with low level of education to read leaflets and mobilizing financial resource to enable the government’s intervention on subsidizing television to boost its usage by low-income farmers for timely access to agricultural information.
