Utilization of flyash as filler for unsaturated polyester resin

Abstract: ABSTRACT:Flyash is an inexpensive material that can reduce the overall cost of the composite if used as a filler for unsaturated polyester resin (PR). Flyash-filled unsaturated polyester resin (FPR) was cast into sheets. The tensile strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus were determined. Calcium carbonate-filled polyester resin (CPR) and PR were also cast into sheets. The above-mentioned properties were determined and a comparison was made. The filler concentration was varied from 0 to 15 wt %. It w… Show more

“…Fly ash contains hollow microspheres called cenospheres, which primarily consist of silica and alumina [21,22]. Cenospheres have been dispersed in different matrices like cement, polyester and epoxy resins for producing syntactic foams [23,24]. Low cost of cenospheres can make syntactic foams economical [25] while improving the mechanical and thermal characteristics.…”

“…Many polymer composite industries are trying to use inorganic filler in polymer matrix to improve the mechanical properties and to reduce the cost of the final product. Fly ash, an absolutely low cost inorganic waste product obtained from thermal power stations, is available abundantly and poses environmental hazards and disposal problems [2] . Fly ash mainly comprises alumino silicate, calcium oxide and Ferric oxide, which is used in construction industry because of its advantages such as low density, low cost, strong filling ability, smooth spherical surface, small and well distributed internal stress in the products and good processability of the filled materials [3] .…”

“…Hence they can be used as weight reducing particulate fillers in polymers that eventually lead to a cut in the production cost of products based on polymer composites. For instance, they have been incorporated in metals, ceramics and polymer matrices for producing low cost composite material and coating foams for industry applications [4][5][6]. In the case of polymers, cenospheres not only reduce resin consumption but also improve the flow ability of base polymers as well.…”
