“…), which leads to them being considered as potential pollinators (Jauker & Wolters, ; Pontin, Wade, Kehrli, & Wratten, ; Rader et al, ). In fact, these insects have proved to be efficient when working in isolated cages in greenhouses to improve the seed production of different crops (Gladis, ; Jarlan, de Oliveira, & Gingras, ; Kim, Goh, Hong, & Lee, ; Kobayashi, ; Ohsawa & Namai, , ; Okamoto, Goto, & Ueki, ; Takeda & Yanase, ).…”

“…Adult flies are efficient crop pollinators (Howlett & Gee, 2019; Rader et al, 2020) and play a vital role in horticulture, as well as in fruit and vegetable production in greenhouses (Garratt et al, 2014; Jarlan et al, 1997; Takeda & Yanase, 1990). In addition, the rat‐tailed drone fly maggots (the immature stage) play an important ecological role as saprophages in liquid organic matter (Speight, 2020).…”

“…The hoverfly Eristalis tenax is a cosmopolitan species that uses organic matter as its food source (Heal, 1979a). Adult Eristalis resemble the honeybee Apis mellifera and are important pollinators of a variety of plants in both natural and agricultural systems (Heal, 1979a; Jarlan et al, 1997; Johnson et al, 2009; Kehinde & Samways, 2014; Rotheray & Gilbert, 2011), including important crops such as Brassica ( Brassica campestris L. and Brassica juncea L. Ohsawa & Namai, 1987, 1988), green tea ( Camellia sinensis L. Takeda & Yanase, 1990), grapes ( Vitis coignetiae Pulliat Okamoto et al, 2008), apple ( Malus domestica Borkh Solomon & Kendall, 1970) and strawberry (Kendall et al, 1971). Pollination by Eristalis hoverflies increases the circumference, length, and weight of fruit (Jarlan et al, 1997).…”
