ReviewExtraction, separation, and detection methods for phenolic acids and flavonoidsThe impetus for developing analytical methods for phenolic compounds in natural products has proved to be multifaceted. Hundreds of publications on the analysis of this category of compounds have appeared over the past two decades. Traditional and more advanced techniques have come to prominence for sample preparation, separation, detection, and identification. This review provides an updated and extensive overview of methods and their applications in natural product matrices and samples of biological origin. In addition, it critically appraises recent developments and trends, and provides selected representative bibliographic examples.

ÖzAmaç: Günümüzde Tamamlayıcı ve Alternatif Tıp (TAT) yöntemlerinin kullanımı hızla artmaktadır. Bu çalışmada bitkisel tedavi (BT) kullanan bireylerin sosyodemografik özellikleri ve bu yöntemi tercih etme nedenlerinin irdelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Materyal ve Metot: Çalışmamızda, İstanbul'da, bitkisel ürünlerin satışının yapıldığı bir dükkânda veya aktarda, bitkisel ürün almaya gelen kişilere yüz yüze anket yöntemi kullanılarak, bitkisel tedavi kullanımına ilişkin soruları içeren anket uygulandı. SPSS 16.0 versiyonunda frekans, Ki-kare ve Fisher's Kesin Ki-kare testi kullanılarak analizler yapıldı. Bulgular: Çalışmaya 102'si erkek (%53,7), 88'i kadın (%46,3) olmak üzere toplam 190 kişi dahil edildi. Bireylerin 20'si (%10,5) 0-19 yaş arası, 86'sı (%45,3) 20-39 yaş arası, 84'ü (%44,2) 40-90 yaş arasındaydı. BT kullanan kişilerin büyük bir kısmı genç erişkin (20-39 yaş) idi. Bireylerin 141'i (%74,2) BT kullanma konusunda doktoruna danışmamıştı ve doktorlarının BT kullanmaya karşı olduğunu düşünüyordu. Bitkisel ürünler en fazla kilo verme amaçlı kullanılmaktaydı ve en çok n=83;%43,7) aynı rahatsızlığı çeken diğer hastaların tavsiyesi ile kullanmaya başlanıyordu. Tüm bireyler bitkisel tedavi kullanmaktan memnundu ve 154 kişi (%81,1) diğer TAT yöntemi de kullanabileceklerini bildirdiler. Çalışmamızda eğitim düzeyi istatistiksel olarak anlamlı olmasa da (p>0,05) eğitim düzeyi yüksek kişilerin bitkisel tedavi yöntemini daha fazla tercih ettikleri belirlendi. Sonuç: Günümüzde bitkisel tedavi kullanımı artmaktadır. Sağlık çalışanları için bitkisel tedavi ile ilgili bilimsel veri oluşturmak ve sağlık personelleri ve tıp öğrencilerini TAT konusunda eğitmek TAT'ın doğru kullanımı için uygun olacaktır. In this study, it was aimed to investigate sociodemographic characteristics of individuals using herbal therapy (HT) and the reasons of preferring this method. Materials and Method: In our study, a survey was carried out by face to face method, in a shop in İstanbul, where herbal products are sold, to the subjects who come to buy herbal products. Analysis were made in SPSS 16.0 version using frequency, Chi-square and Fisher's Exact Chi-square tests. Results: In our study, 102 males (53.7%) and 88 women (46.3%) with a total of 190 people were included. 20 individuals (10.5%) aged 0-19 years, 86 (45.3%) of them were aged 20-39 years and 84 (44.2%) of them were between the ages of 40-90 years. Most people who use HT were young adults (20-39 years); 141 (74.2%) individuals have not consulted the doctor about using HT method and they have thought the doctors are against HT method. HT was used most commonly to loose weight (n=83, 43.7%,) and with the advice of other patients suffering from the same illness. Japanese herbal medicine, also known as Kampo, is used for various diseases in Japan. One of those medicines, Dai-Kenchu-To (DKT), is considered clinically effective for adhesive bowel obstruction and chronic constipation. Although scientific evidence of DKT to improve adhesive bowel obstruction was shown in several previous reports, mechanism of DKT to improve constipation remains unknown. Our aim was to study the effect of intragastric DKT on colonic motility and defecation, and the involvement of various receptors in DKT-induced colonic contractions. Five beagle dogs were instructed with serosal strain-gauge force transducers to measure circular muscle activity at the proximal, middle, and distal colon. Dogs are suitable for a present study to administer the drugs repeatedly to the same individual and look at its effect on colonic motility. We studied the effects of DKT (2.5 or 5 g) administered into the stomach on colonic motility. Muscarinic receptor antagonist atropine, nicotinic receptor antagonist hexamthonium, or 5-hydroxytryptamine-3 receptor antagonist ondansetron was injected intravenously 10 min before DKT administration. Capsazepine, an antagonist to transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1 (TRPV1), was administered into the stomach 5 min before DKT administration. Intragastric DKT (2.5 or 5 g) induced colonic contractions within 10 min after administration but did not induce defecation. Pretreatment with atropine, hexamthonium, ondansetron, or capsazepine inhibited DKT-induced colonic contractions. These results indicate that orally administered DKT stimulates colonic motility via TRPV1, muscarinic, nicotinic, and 5-hydroxytryptamine-3 receptors, thereby providing scientific support for the efficacy of oral DKT in chronic constipation.
