“…Increased strength, reduced neuromuscular fatigue, and increased cortical drive are crucial factors to athletic performance, so by optimizing these physiological factors athletic performance may improve (Armstrong and McManus 2010 ; McManus and Armstrong 2011 ; Harries et al 2012 ; Marshall et al 2014 ; Kockum and Heijne 2015 ). Additionally, athletes have reported improvement in athletic performance (Brolinson et al 2012 ; Nook et al 2016 ) and reduction in pain (using VAS-score) following SM (Nook et al 2016 ). Thus, emphasizing that SM could be used to enhance athletic performance, with the advantage of it being drug-free, safe and cost-effective (Bronfort et al 2010 , 2012 ; Tsertsvadze et al 2014 ).…”

“…7 At the 2009 World Games, chiropractors recorded 1,514 treatments with a utilisation rate of 15.31% for athletes 8 and this utilisation rate increased to 18.1% at the 2013 World Games. 9 However, there is scant research reporting the clinical characteristics of those chiropractors managing athletes or sports people, with the body of knowledge primarily consisting of sporting event surveillance designs. [8][9][10]…”

“…Manual-based therapies are used and accepted in competitive sports for the prevention and treatment of muscle injuries [18]. A retrospective analysis of treatment charts of athletes seeking chiropractic treatment at the world games in 2013 reported that out of 2,964 accredited athletes, 18% used chiropractic care, and 85% reported immediate pain reduction [19]. The use of manual therapy (16%) by athletes in our study corresponds approximately to the usage behavior of the general population in Germany (14%) [2], which rates manual therapy and osteopathy as particularly effective compared to other CM procedures [5].…”
