BackgroundThe International Safe Motherhood initiative provides a focus for programmes and research to improve maternal health in low – income countries. Antenatal care is one of the key pillars of the initiative. This study sought to examine the association between background characteristics and choice of skilled providers of antenatal care services in Ghana.MethodsThe study used data from the six rounds of the Ghana Demographic and Health Survey (GDHS). Binary logistic regression models were applied to analyse the data.ResultsResults show that the proportion of women who received antenatal care (ANC) services from skilled providers improved over the period. Also, women with secondary education (OR = 1.42, CI = 1.07–1.88), richest wealth status (OR = 5.10, CI = 2.28–11.85) were more likely to utilise antenatal care services from skilled providers. Whereas women from rural areas (OR = 0.55, CI = 0.41–0.74), with four births or more (OR = 0.55, CI = 0.36–0.85) and from the northern ethnic group were less likely to utilise antenatal care services from skilled providers.ConclusionChoice of skilled providers of antenatal care services were predicted by some predisposing factors including education, ethnicity, and ecological zone. Also enabling factors such as wealth status, residence and the need for care factor, parity predicted choice of skilled providers of antenatal care services. Women with secondary or higher education, those within richer and richest wealth status, those from forest zone are more likely to utilise the services of skilled providers during their antenatal care visits. Whereas women from rural areas, those with four births or more and those with the northern ethnic group were more likely to utilise ANC service from unskilled providers. The Ghana Health Service and Ministry of Health should encourage women in rural areas to utilise antenatal care services from skilled providers through social and behaviour change communication campaigns.

Objective: This study is aimed to determining the prevalence of antenatal care (ANC) utilization and associated factors among women of Aneded woreda who give birth in the past 12 months before the survey. Methods: Community-based cross-sectional combining both quantitative and qualitative study design with total sample size of 415 is used. The data are entered and analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20 and binary logistic regression model is used to see the association of different variables with the outcome variable. Odds ratio at 95% confidence interval was used to measure strength, and statistical significance of associations. Results: The overall mothers utilization of ANC is 60.5% (55.4, 65.3). Multivariable analysis shows being rural resident, no pregnancy complication, get health education about ANC, give birth at health center, and traveling less than or equal to 1 h distance on foot from home to health center that is significant factors for ANC service utilization. Conclusion: In this study, even though the result revealed that percentage of women who utilized ANC service were greater than women who did not utilize; the difference is slightly lower as compared to the regional and national averages and more efforts should be needed to improve ANC utilization of mother.

Background : Antenatal care (ANC) is an important determinant of high maternal mortality rate and one of the basic components of maternal care on which the life of mothers and newborn babies depend. Objective : To study the Antenatal care practice among pregnant women in a selected rural area. Methodology : This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among pregnant women in a selected rural area from July 2016 to December 2016. Total sample was 121. Purposive sampling technique was followed. Data collection was done by face to face interview by using pretested structured questionnaire. Data was analyzed by SPSS version 17.0. Results : A total of 121 women were interviewed. Sixty nine (57.02%) pregnant women were registered for ANC. Among them 47(68.11%) of respondents completed more than 4ANC visits. For the current pregnancy 56(46.28%) preferred Upazila Health Complex (UHC) and home delivery was preferred by 34(28.09%) respondents. Among the respondent age group 25-30 yrs were 61(50.41%) and educated upto primary level were 59(48.76%). Monthly income between 5000-10000 taka was among 48(39.66%) respondents. Most of their husbands (52.06%) were educated up to primary level and 25.61 % of them were garments worker and 23.96 % were day laborers. Conclusion : ANC practice was not satisfactory. Only half of the pregnant women attended for ANC and completed minimum four visits. Nearly half of the pregnant women preferred UHC.
