Utilization of Agro-Industrial By-Products for Sustainable Poultry Production

Abstract: Agro-industrial by-products (AIBPs) that are not intended for human consumption can be used as alternatives to conventional feedstuffs in animal nutrition to produce animal products without competing for land or triggering the food-feed competition, thus leading to environmental, social, and economic sustainability. These by-products are also known to contain several bioactive compounds and have a potential to become nutraceuticals that can promote the health and well-being of poultry. The potentials of some A… Show more

“…This coproduction of bioenergy and bioactive compounds improves access to renewable energy and bioproducts, promotes diversification, and creates jobs. Recently, many reviews have been published on the use of fruit byproducts as alternative sources of nutrients [12][13][14]. The nutritional characteristics of fruit byproducts can be found in repositories such as "Feedipedia" (http://www.feedipedia.org/ accessed on 6 February 2024) and "Feed Tables" (https://www.feedtables.com/ accessed on 6 February 2024).…”

“…Comfort calls, typically emitted during peaceful activities such as nesting or preening, reflect a state of contentment and security (Bestman, 2022). Conversely, distress calls signal discomfort, fear, or pain, serving as an immediate indicator of welfare concerns (Papageorgiou et al, 2023; Manteuffel et al, 2004). The ability to monitor and interpret these vocalizations provides invaluable insights into the health, environmental quality, and social well-being of the flock, allowing for timely interventions to mitigate stressors (Neethirajan, 2023).…”

“…Otherwise, with the increasing world population, there is a significant increase in animal protein sources and limited feed sources for poultry ( Ahmad and Al-Hamdani, 2023 ). Moreover, dramatic escalations in the charges of feed constituents, thus beholding suitable alternative sources for poultry food, have lately been reconnoitered ( de-Cara et al, 2023 ; Georganas et al, 2023 ).…”

“…Commercially, the feed cost may be responsible for more than 70% of the total charges of broilers in the productive cycle. Thus, any decrease in feed charges, which still conserves broilers' health status and performance, is bound to have a straight constructive influence on the profitability of broiler productive cycles ( Georganas et al, 2023 ). Nutritionists recently focused on discovering sustainable or alternative protein sources and growth promoters from agro-industrial wastes to be involved in broilers' diets ( Imperatore et al, 2023 ).…”
