Utility optimal scheduling and admission control for adaptive video streaming in small cell networks

Abstract: We consider the jointly optimal design of a transmission scheduling and admission control policy for adaptive video streaming over small cell networks. We formulate the problem as a dynamic network utility maximization and observe that it naturally decomposes into two subproblems: admission control and transmission scheduling. The resulting algorithms are simple and suitable for distributed implementation. The admission control decisions involve each user choosing the quality of the video chunk asked for downl… Show more

“…This paper is motivated by a novel architecture that we have developed in the framework of a wide universityindustry collaborative project [8], [9] and articulated in a number of papers covering various aspects of our proposal [10]- [15]. As summarized in [16], the main idea of this architecture, nicknamed FemtoCaching, consists of replacing backhaul capacity with storage capacity at the small cell access points.…”

“…[1] There are a few papers where authors propose their interpretation of QoE and build algorithms for the QoE improvement. For example, in [2] quality profiles for users are measured by structural similarity index (SSIM), and are improved by joint use of scheduling and admission control. In paper [3] QoE is defined as rebuffering percentage (percentage of the total presentation time in which the user experiences rebuffering due to buffer starvation).…”

“…Based on this importance, various types of video streaming algorithms have been investigated; and one of major research directions is stochastic video streaming which aiming at the time-average video quality maximization subject to video queue/buffer stability [3]- [8]. In [3]- [5], stochastic video streaming algorithms for device-to-device distributed computing systems are proposed.…”
