“…The class with the highest parental illness intrusiveness was expected to report more depressive symptoms. 10,11 Poorer treatment adherence was also expected in this latter class, being in line with comparable work showing associations between caregiver strain and poorer diabetes outcomes. 16…”

“…In former studies, parental illness intrusiveness has been positively related to parental depressive symptoms. 10,11 Moreover, it could also relate to poorer diabetes outcomes in the child over time, similar to what has been found for caregiver strain. 2,16 Unfortunately, all former studies on parental illness intrusiveness have used crosssectional designs.…”

“…family members, spouse, friends, and compromise in self-improvement) showed the largest magnitude of relatedness with emotional distress (effect sizes ~0.4). Taken together, individual aspects of illness intrusiveness (PIIRS subscales) contributed deferentially to caregiver emotional distress, thus multidimensional assessments of illness intrusiveness can allow a holistic and comprehensive understanding of SCD interference with caregivers’ life domains (Devins 1994; Fedele et al, 2012). Such a comprehensive evaluation of caregiver perception of SCD intrusiveness can enhance personalized discussion with caregivers in a clinical context to bolster their resilience, coping skills, and wellbeing (Hundt et al, 2015).…”

“…The score can range from 13 to a maximum of 91, and higher scores indicate greater severity of burden. PIIRS has been used cross-culturally in different study populations and countries, including Nigeria (Abikoye, 2010; Devins, 2010; Fedele et al, 2012; Hundt et al, 2015). The reliability coefficients for the GHQ-12 and PIIRS in the present study were 0.97 and 0.92 respectively (Abikoye, 2010; Devins, 2010; Fedele et al, 2012; Gureje & Obikoya, 1990; Hundt et al, 2015).…”
