Utility of silhouette showcards to assess adiposity in three countries across the epidemiological transition

Abstract: The Pulvers’ silhouette showcards provide a non-invasive and easy-to-use way of assessing an individual’s body size perception using nine silhouette shapes. However, their utility across different populations has not been examined. This study aimed to assess: 1) the relationship between silhouette perception and measured anthropometrics, i.e., body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist-height-ratio (WHtR), and 2) the ability to predict with silhouette showcards anthropometric adiposity measures, i.… Show more

“…The silhouette cards were originally created as a body image instrument for use among urban African Americans, but the figures were specifically designed with the intention of being ethnically ambiguous. Additional validity evidence has since reported the feasible use of these cards across multiple populations 84,85 . Since the Pulver's silhouette cards were separately validated for female and male sex, and to our knowledge there are currently no standards for collecting and reporting sex nonspecific anthropometric data, 86,87 images that were rated as “indeterminate” were not subsequently rated for body size.…”
