Utility of serum eosinophil-derived neurotoxin (EDN) measurement by ELISA in young children with asthma

Abstract: The BioTracer™ K EDN ELISA Kit was accurate and useful in measuring EDN levels in young asthma patient serum. Because of our kit's distinct advantages and utility, we suggest this kit can be used for the timely diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of asthma in asthma patients of all ages, especially those too young to perform pulmonary function tests.

“…Unlike the other three, EDN has an isoelectronic point of 8.3, which is close to neutral; therefore, it is possible to measure accurately and reproducibly in the blood. 35) In a previous study, we compared the concentrations of serum EDN to asthma symptom scores in preschool children. 36) Serum EDN levels were the highest in children with acute asthma, followed by those with stable asthma and those in the control group, and the differences among the three groups were significant.…”

“…Using 44.2 ng/mL (median+1SD) as the cut off for an elevated EDN level compared to those found in Controls, the sensitivity was 81.3%, the specificity was 87.1%, the positive predictive value (PPV) of EDN level for asthma 90.7 %, and the negative predictive value (NPV) was 75.0%. 35) Another recent study compared the effects of montelukast and 0.5-mg budesonide inhalation suspension therapy for 12 weeks in symptomatic preschool children with asthma and serum EDN levels ≥53 ng/mL. 37) During the study period, asthma control days increased in both groups and there was no significant intergroup difference.…”

“… 27 31 Using a more accurate biomarker for eosinophilic inflammation in the management of asthma may produce even better results. 32 33 It has been suggested by many studies that EDN is a more accurate biomarker than eosinophil numbers or percentages. 11 12 22 32 Future studies of EDN as a biomarker for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of conditions associated with airway inflammation — such as recurrent wheeze, multiple-trigger wheeze and asthma — are needed.…”

“…EDN concentration was studied in plasma, urine, and stools in a number of inflammatory diseases, including asthma and atopic dermatitis [51][52][53]. In terms of FA, Ada et al studied a group of children diagnosed with FPIES, in whom the level of EDN in stools was tested before and after oral food challenge.…”
