Utility of PAS and β-catenin staining in histological categorisation and prediction of prognosis of hepatoblastomas

Abstract: PAS is a simple stain and can be utilised in histological categorisation of HB and also predicting its outcome. Nuclear β-catenin staining which is significantly common in embryonal elements in HB predicts shorter survival.

“…Both absolute ␤-catenin level and nuclear localization are of prognostic significance in some HB studies, although the degrees to which these are mutually and mutationally dependent have not been determined (3,58,74). Missense and in-del mutations can profoundly affect mRNA stability by altering folding, splicing, recognition by micro-RNAs, and translational efficiency (75)(76)(77).…”

“…Their study concludes that both these markers were beneficial in the pretreatment group and post-treatment specimen. 8,17 tumours were positive for Beta-catenin in both epithelial and mesenchymal components in the pretreatment group. The epithelial component of all the untreated cases showed intense cytoplasmic Glutamine synthetase staining, and malignant mesenchymal elements in all the cases were negative.…”

“…CD34 shows diffuse capillarization in HB, which is not seen in benign lesions and normal hepatocytes, indicating that sinusoids are lined by endothelial cells in the tumor. Beta-catenin gives nuclear and cytoplasmic positivity in both HB and normal hepatocytes, which has diagnostic and prognostic significance in HB [11]. The SCUD subtype shows the variable expression for PanCK, CK8, CK-18, and vimentin.…”
